Highlights in one place and notes in another?

Am I right in thinking that Logos places my highlights in one particular place (an annotation file for all highlights in a given style) and notes in another (in a notes file that I create)?

Short of cutting and pasting all of my highlights into the notes file, is there any way I can get the highlights to appear automatically in the notes file alongside the notes?

Thanks Graham. That's basically what I need, except... Instead of showing my entire highlight, I see something odd eg.

"The ministry of … House of Bishops"

I don't want to see the "..." but want to view the entire highlight. Is there something in the Settings I can tweak so that the full highlight is included (as with Kindle)?

Thanks. I hope this is fixed at some stage. It's sufficiently rubbish at present to have made me switch the highlights back to the default palette note. I didn't see any solutions that would work for me.

It's not rubbish - it works exactly as I would expect. It would never occur to me to use highlights as a form of clippings. To me the distinction is clear:

notes when I wish to add to the text
highlights when I want to modify the text
clippings when I wish to duplicate the text

However, I do understand why you and others wish to highlight then extract the highlights. And I strongly support the addition of this function which other reading apps have made "expected behavior".

But users must understand that anytime they use software, they have to be prepared to achieve a task the way the software is designed to work. It is an unrealistic expectation to expect the software to anticipate or implement all the individual preferences of all the individual users. The one exception - Denise's approach of writing her own software leaves her in the position of being constrained only by her own interest and computer capability.

Ok, to clarify, it's "rubbish" for my purposes because I currently must duplicate my work by a) highlighting and b) copy pasting my highlight into a notes file in order to make a comment on it.

To me the distinction is clear:

notes when I wish to add to the text

highlights when I want to modify the text

clippings when I wish to duplicate the text

I would argue that a highlight is not a modification, but that it is a type of note, and that's where I think the problem of classification lies. I can't fathom why you see highlights as modifying the text, given that I'd see modifying the text as actually changing the wording of the text.

Again, though, it's not that I just wish to highlight and extract highlights. I can do that at present with the (rather slow) wildcard search feature that you suggested. What I can't do is export my highlighted extracts and notes from the same file. If Logos were functioning like a paper book, I could cut a page out of my book that would contain the note I wrote on my book and the highlight of the text I made. Cutting out the entire page would do the trick. Logos seems to treat notes and highlights separate from the text so that there are three layers a) the text itself, b) the highlight and c) the notes. This makes sense programatically... It would make more sense for it to work that way if it were possible to extract two layers at the same time (like Paint Shop Pro) so that the notes could be viewed on the same page as the highlights. It does not, I argue, make sense from the point of view of a reader, given that at present, the b) and c) either need to be extracted separately, or c) can contain b), but b) is unreadable.

Agree. But the software engineers must understand that if they are designing software that is meant to replace or supplement written texts, that users will have a reasonable expectation that it will function as similarly as possible to the written texts. And, yes, it is unrealistic to expect software to anticipate every user preference. However, it is reasonable to expect the software to function somewhat intuitively. If I were working in BASIC, and said PRINT "A B C D E F" or whatever, and the computer returned "A.......F", I'd be very surprised.

I agree that this is a very reasonable additional function. As for Basic, the last time I had reason to look at BASIC was when my son was in the 8th grade. However, in a variety of other languages, I spent a career shortening data to use as a title (and the highlighted text is stored as a title not note. which is the real core of the misunderstanding between UI designer/Logos user). And, Rayner, I don't recall your ever making unreasonable requests or insisting that it be "your way or wrong". But I have become very tire of "garbage or synonyms" meaning "not what I want" rather than "incorrect or mislabeled data"; or "fixed" as a synonym of additional feature, feature modification ...

I honestly don't see this as an additional function, but as a broken existing function, but I take your point that, generally, enhancement should be logged as requests and not as bugs. If Logos presume (as you do) that this is a modification, should I log it on the User voting forum system??
