Need help finding information on salvation

Can anyone help me frame a search query or recommend resources that will help me find information on how one is saved. Here's my research issu. Many people think Christ died for only the elect or that when one receives Christ His substitutionary death is applied to them at that time ( and some think only for the sins they have committed up to that time but not after). I think the underlying premise in these arguments is that remission of sins equals salvation. However I see in scripture a teaching that Christ died for all humans. This would mean that eternal life is not just the result of having the penalty of one's sins remitted, but also upon believing God and trusting Christ, that is, accepting the gift and the giver.

I don't present this as a discussion topic in this forum. I'm only asking for help in finding ways of searching my library so I can see what others have said about it. Or if you know of a resource or two that deals specifically with this topic I'd appreciate knowing about them.

A <Topic salvation> search of my entire library (Silver Scholar) shows nothing useful. Oddly a search for "how one is saved" yields no results at all.

Hi Jim, if you don't already, I would recommend getting this book into your library:

Got Questions Ministries. Got Questions? Bible Questions Answered. Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software, 2010.

There, you will find answers to such questions as What is the Remission of Sin?, What are the Steps to Salvation?, What is Salvation?, etc. I believe you can access some of the content from gotquestions.org, but it is very convenient to have it in your Logos library as well.

Aside from that, one interesting search I could suggest is "remission of sin*" NEAR salvation.

What you can find obviously depends on what you have. Only some resources are tagged by topic. As an alternative you can try to search these fields for salvation OR saved:

This will bring up articles that have these terms in headings, titles or topics.

Also "Lookup Salvation" in the command box will bring up your top prioritized resource that has a corresponding article. Then you use the + tab to look up other entries:

In my library, the first article was in the New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis. When I pressed on the + tab I got this below. The item on the far right are other entries titled "salvation":

Also, sometimes something as simple as bringing up your library pane and typing "salvation" can remind you of books you own that are pertinent and are tagged correspondingly.

Francis, I tried duplicating your search but can't figure out how to get "Heading Text; Heading Title; Large Text; Title; Topic" into the Search fields. There is a drop down list of search fields but I'm only given three choices: Footnote text, Large text, and Surface text.

Also "Lookup Salvation" in the command box will bring up your top prioritized resource that has a corresponding article. Then you use the + tab to look up other entries:

Jim, the options you have under search fields depend on the resources you are searching. If you are seeing only these three choices it could be that 1) you are running a Bible, not a Basic search or 2) you are not searching all your resources. Have you double-checked that this is not the case?

Ah. I see. A bit tricky at first. I was using Basic search, but had to select "All Resources" ("Everything" won't work) then I got a more complete drop down list. Still didn't have "Heading Title" though. Thanks for helping.

Use Factbook to search for Salvation and choose the Topic. It will provide dictionary & preaching articles and links to Topic Guide & Sermon Guide.

back in August, Tes wanted to set up a collection of topically related works in his library - his thread https://community.logos.com/forums/t/87676.aspx didn't go very far, but has some suggestions (including three Vyrso books I mentioned back then).

Initially I thought "there surely is a Reading List with dozens of entries", but not so: https://topics.logos.com/Salvation is empty. Maybe we can share some results of your findings and write it up!

I have been reading several posts where people are requesting ways to search for topical information. What I use is a custom Topic Guide. Below you will find a screenshot of My Topic Guide and instructions how to customize the guide. One important aspect of this guide is having appropriate collections set up.

I have attached a pdf of a section of an currently uncompleted guide that addresses the following steps in detail. Please note the guide covers commentary collections as well as customizing the passage guide, exegetical guide and the topic guide.

The basic steps are as follows:

Create subject or topical collections using those available at https://faithlife.com/logos-collections/documents
You will need to become a member of the group.
Once you have copied the subject collections you want, then you create a custom My Topic Guide.

You can now go to the Logos Home Page and enter your topic or open your My Topic Guide and enter your topic.
You will get dictionary entries, but also entries from your collections that you added to your custom Topic Guide.

Here is what I get when I type Salvation in the Go box on the Logos Homepage:

Note the specific articles in my resources on theology as well as theological dictionaries.

Here is what My Topic Guide looks like to provide an idea of the collections I have included for topical studies. Basically the first 3 are when a Bible Book is entered into the topic guide; then some for biblical places; then theological topics, and lastly some for counseling and application. If I am counseling someone struggling with Anxiety, the last few collections are very helpful.

I know this is a lot of information, but the way Logos is set up, you really need some collections and custom guides to fully benefit from your library. This is the easiest way I have found to do this if you have not already set up collections. If you have collections, then jump to the custom guide section in the attached pdf and set those up. If you have those set up, then you can use the pdf to help someone who does not.

I hope this helps more than confuses.

Of course this process would be a lot easier if FaithLife would consider my suggestion I posted here.

I would suggest doing a search on "Limited Atonement" or "Particular Redemption" and "Universal Atonement" or "Conditional Salvation" etc. The Internet is also a great place to search for an answer. Later you could search out "the five points of Calvinism" or "the five points of Arminianism" for a good side by side comparison.

Great suggestions. Thanks. I agree that the internet yields some helpful results. (I was hoping that somehow my 3000+ book Logos library would yield something useful on such an important topic, but so far I haven't found much that's helpful.)

John, thanks for taking the time to lay out these instructions. I will work through them to see if I can improve my use of Logos. I do have collections set so perhaps that will speed up things. I did go to https://faithlife.com/logos-collections/documents but I don't get it. I didn't see any introduction, overview or instructions so I don't get what its for. Perhaps the video you recommend will explain so I'll look at it soon. Again thanks.

On the top right, click "Join." This will change the whole menu you see and add a new tab called "Documents," or use the link from before after you have joined. Type "salvation" into the search box above the documents and it will filter it down to two (don't hit enter -inexplicably, this will select the x and clear the box). Next to each of these, click the "Actions" button and click "Copy." This will download these collections to your Logos installation, where you can use them once they have synced, instead of making the collections yourself.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I search Logos first and keep it handy, but I also have a massive (OCR) PDF library from things I harvest from around the net. The "Desktop Search" program (www.dtsearch.com) is lightening fast at finding what I need. Every so often, I'll convert a PDF to a Personal Book in Logos and it's normally the PBs (tailored to my interests) that come to the forefront in my Logos searches.
