Importing highlights

I have a list of verses that I want to easily highlight with a custom highlight. Can I somehow import highlights - or, accomplish my goal through some other automated means?

I see that I can import notes into Logos 6 - that's almost what I am looking for.

Notes import is for importing from Libronix (Logos 3). In what format do you have the list of verses?

I am saying that you can highlight verses / words using Visual Filters if you can identify an appropriate search term.

I just played around with Visual filters - powerful! But, I think I'm looking for something different. I am still trying to find a way to associate an image with a verse - but, for many verses. I want to do that using highlighting where each highlight has a specific image.

I hope to import by some means a list of verses that I can associate a specific highlight, and have the image appear beside the verse within each of my Bibles.

I would just do this association manually by creating a highlight for each verse and assigning that highlight to a specific verse. But, I really want that highlight to show up in each of my Bibles. However, a highlight will only appear in the Bible to which it is applied.

Maybe you know the correct approach?

As you note you can't associate highlights with all versions of your Bible so you would need to achieve this using some form of custom note icon (which could be applied "by reference" and so visible in all Bibles). As flagged in the other thread this is not currently possible.

I still actually think the closest to achieving what you want today is with Passage Lists, Visual Filters and Highlighting[:)]

The first thing to do is to import your list of verses. You can do this into a Passage List by importing from a range of different sources. For this example I am using a text file. I have created a file using Notepad which just contains three verse references

I then create a Passage List and import from that text file

This results in

I can then use this Passage List as the "input range" into a Visual Filter

So at this point I have a Visual Filter which acts on the defined set of verses in all Bibles

Now just need to do two things - define a "match term" in the Visual Filter and set up the highlight that you want to apply on a match

I set up a highlight with an image to use for testing

and, recognising that each verse will have a verb, I'm going to match against verbs and apply the highlight to all the results. This gives results like the one shown below

I think there are some issues round the edges of this but it looks as though it gets close to what you are looking for.

Why not have a go with it and see what issues come up?

YEAH!!! That will work. I'm sorry - I was still chasing my earlier idea because I didn't get that using the method you describe above would result in the image being in the Bible I'm looking at. I thought I would have to have my passage list open in parallel. Yes - your idea is great. I will work to implement it this week, and let you know how it goes.

I think Graham's idea is a good one.

I might be inclined to modify it slightly if you can.

Rather than use a passage list and morph search, you could just use the {Milestone} search operator in a basic or Bible search.

So you'd write your search term as {Milestone <John 1:1>}, {Milestone <Luke 4:3>}, {Milestone <Heb 3:1>}.

Then create the custom visual filter image as Graham suggested.

It has two advantages over Graham's suggestion:

It would work in Bibles that don't have reverse interlinears.
If you wanted, you could also highlight the verses, and not just put images next to them.

(Or, if you like the passage list idea, use Graham's method but do a Bible search for {Milestone <Gen-Rev>} instead of a morph search for @V. This may be a bit inefficient though.)

I just followed the instructions you provided. We're getting closer, and I don't want to give up. I'm still a little short. My objective is to assign a different image for each verse in my list. The instructions provided will only allow me to assign a single highlight - at least, as far as I understand the instructions. Is there any way to assign a named highlight for each passage when importing?

not easy to tell. Is the Visual Filter active? Can you post a screenshot of its definition?

exactly what Mark proposed. You'd obviously need a specific highlighting style for each of these pictures/highlights and then you would have to build a line in the VF for every single one of those.

Does a "Milestone" point at a specific verse?

yes.

Note that this is set up as a bible search. If you were to define it as a basic search against all text in your library, the pictures would come up in commentaries as well.

Okay - I finally have this working. I didn't have it configured correctly. Thank you all for your help. This is exactly what I need. However, it's a lot of configuration for me as I have over 400 verses that I want to implement - each verse with its own image.

I've asked before, but I need to ask again - is there any way that I can programmatically implement what I'm after? Or, some sort of "import" that would associate each verse in my passage list with a visual filter with a specified highlight - wow, just saying it all is a bit much. Is there a forum where I can get to the development team at Logos who can help? I'll bet there is an API - maybe not published.

I am not aware of any programmatic way to do this.

There's nothing that can do what you're asking for. It's theoretically possible to edit the /Documents/VisualFilter/VisualFilter.db file, but I don't recommend it, and you'll be on your own if you try.

Logos worked on their (very limited) API last time that we know of early in version 4. I'm not sure whether this even predates the possibilities we're discussing here. They intentionally didn't want to expose much of the Logos features in the API since they didn't feel comfortable with the extensive way power users used this in Libronix/Logos 3 (that's how I understood respective comments I read on the forum).

If there is an API, fellow MVP Mark Barnes would probably be able to tell you all about it. EDIT: I see he has commented above already /EDIT

Should you you insist on doing this somewhat automated, it may be possible to reverse-engineer where Logos stores the pictures, the definition for the highlighting styles and the highlights - and it may be possible to then put this stuff directly into the SQLite database tables. This is something I'd consider if I had to do it. But I'd most probably refrain from doing this, as manipulating data outside of the application is high-risk stuff. Not really knowing what you're doing and where possible safeguards are coded, you might break your installation beyond repair and via automatic syncing of documents even mess up a working stable installation you kept along.
