What is Kindle Whispernet? And do you have to use it?

I was about to sign up my kindle for downloading purchased resources but noticed that there is a fee for using Amazon Whispernet.  I have used my kindle before to download pdf files, e.g., that I sent to myself, but never had to pay fees.  I have a Paperwhite.  Just wondering what Whispernet is and if it must be used and is automatically used, or if there is another way to get Logos resources on my device.  I only have Wifi and not a 3G or 4G connection.

Whispernet is the 3G data service by Amazon. You can ignore it. For more info see Amazon or this:

The "send to kindle" service by Logos does not require Whispernet. You simply need a wifi connection. Logos sends your book as an email to your device's email address... the process is seamless.
