Files hosted with Logos - disaster scenario?

I have decided to import several years of notes into Logos using Favorites, Documents, Clippings, etc.

Moving from Onenote, I decided to do this because of the usefulness of the reference tags, and links to resources. I can consolidate my searching in study. Nothing wrong with Onenote.

I am wondering though if I am taking risk in losing my notes? I know it exists on both Onenote and Logos, as either company could have a disaster. But what kind of backups can I make? I do not want to keep both locations, so I plan to delete the Onenote notes as they are imported.

When I go to my Faithlife profile>documents, I don't see an option to download, or export. When I browse to "L:\Users\Anthony\AppData\Local\Logos5\Documents\5ytpygze.spc\Documents" on my PC, there are only database files.

As a longtime user & retired IS manager, for your question I can only point to the past as a guideline for the future...

Your observations about notes that there are no options to export, etc. point to an issue that IMO make Notes a risk. Why a risk? Logos hasn't so far said Notes were an intentional strategy. They've actually said (paraphrasing Bob, as best I recollect) that Notes were actually a concession to users, & that Logos didn't really want to reinvent the word processor. As a result, when Logos database formats changed (for good strategic reasons), notes weren't always carried immediately with the new format (going either from L2 to L3 or from L3 to L4--can't remember which, Notes came some time after the initial release of L3). In addition, verse lists were dropped for a time; when they came back, the old verse lists weren't compatible with the new format & had to be recreated.

No electronic format or media has a long-term future. On e-media, CDs replaced floppies. DVDs have mostly replaced CDs. USB drives are replacing DVDs. The cloud (including servers at home that are internet accessible) will at least partially replace USB drives. It's been similar for database formats, on which Notes depends.

For an e-media format, only one with "religious" commitment to be able to access its prior formats (especially the last one) is trustworthy enough to commit material we want to keep permanently. IMO, Only word processors have demonstrated that kind of commitment. I'm thinking particularly of MS-Word, but others have followed their lead.

I don't even know how permanent Notes is. MS has shown a tendency to drop good products for falling off their "strategy" plate (e.g., Streets & Trips, to name just one).

I rarely disagree with Bill, but in this case I must. While at one time, Faithlife considered notes to be a marginal need, they have changed their position and tied a number of critical functions to Notes. They even wrote the "word processor" they said they'd never write.

Faithlife runs dual sites so if one site goes down they should be able to transition quickly to the disaster site. We did have a longer than expected practice run shortly before the second site was up and running but no one lost data. When people have accidental deleted their data, Faithlife has been willing to go into the backup files and retrieve them ... sometimes at considerable effort.

For personal convenience it is worth mirroring your computer for a rapid rebuild which would provide an additional personal backup.

And as a minor correction of fact, there is an export function in the usual location in the resource menu. And one downloads from your documents site by restore.

I do have have a raid1 set up and a local backup solution. I think that will probably be fine. I think it's a natural tendency to consider the worst, so these were thoughts that followed my thought "wow it would stink to lose all this!".

I would hope for a way to obtain it quickly and easily from Logos however. Surely they will create a quick export option, maybe to a .zip file, in a generic format (.doc, .pdf, etc).

As many on the forum laughingly know, I'm a literalist. And from a plain-text reading of the thread title, I'd say the risk borders on zero. I don't have Bill's knowledgability, but the thread title provides the answer ... it'd have to be a major disaster, either in complete stupidity, or an earthquake off the coast of Washington, generating a wave exactly 28.5 feet high (thereby wiping out both data sites .... that's not from any reliable knowledgability on my part .... just guessing).

However speaking to the 'meaning' of the thread (which us literalists typically avoid), the risk to your notes is equal to the value of your notes. And a company sold to another company is a much higher risk scenario. Or three owners driving to Seatec, and being hit by a semi possessed by a sleeping driver (we saw several of those on our vacation last week).

That's why 'what are your notes worth'? If you have believing children, I'd say a lot. Or if you're a well regarded teacher and many students. My Dad had a computer Bible program he used for many years. Wrote many books with it. But not his Bible notes. Then his computer died. The Bible software was a hassle to update. It just died. So we xeroxed his hand-written notes. Happy.

I keep all my notes outside of Logos. But that's only because my opinion of notes handling in Logos is abysmal (but improving ... true, MJ). By 'abysmal' I refer to decent analytics of your notes .... your thinking as you study. Just as important as your books.
