What Puritan resources does FaithLife have that specifically deal with the Puritan theological view that the Catholic system or popery is anti-christ?
No arguments thanks - just resources.
mm.
When I do a search for "pope NEAR antichrist" I come up with 4784 results.
How do I do a search for books only, that have puritan views regarding the/a pope or the catholic church as the antichrist?
I created a collection of Puritan resources and searched pope WITHIN 5 WORDS antichrist and received 215 hits in my library.
s
I get close to 2000 results.
Thanks, but how do I narrow that down to the Puritans' view only?

Never mind. I see you made a collection of puritan resources.
Did you first create a collection of Puritan resources and only search that?
You can find a rule for making a Puritan collection here:

I have several puritan collection rules. Here is the one I used for the above search -
Author:(“Baxter, Richard”, “Beeke, Joel R.”, “Brook, Benjamin”, “Brooks, Thomas”, “Bunyan, John”, “Burroughs, Jeremiah”, “Charnock, Stephen”, “Edwards, Jonathan”, “Flavel, John”, “Goodwin, Thomas”, “Hopkins, Ezekiel”, “Howe, John”, “Jacomb, Thomas”, “Manton, Thomas”, “Murray, David”, “Neal, Daniel”, “Owen, John”, “Packer, J. I.”, “Polhill, Edward”, “Ridgley, Thomas”, “Scougal, Henry”, “Scudder, Henry”, “Sibbes, Richard”, “Swinnock, George”, “Traill, Robert”, “Ussher, James”) OR Publisher:(“Richard Owen Roberts”)
I have a collection of solely "puritans/church history/Europe/American" puritans already.
Did a search in that and came up with the 2000 hits.
What if I did a search for a particular author. Let's say Francis Pieper and his view on said topic?

Hey Rosie [:)]
Once again, do I need to join the group in order to see your tag?

I'll try that. Thanks Bruce.

History of the Puritans seems to have enough articles to provide a decent bibliography to start.

Yes, you do. But you can quit the group afterwards if you don't want anything more from it. It's not my list of tags. It's the one that Andrew Baguley has been maintaining, starting from this thread: https://community.logos.com/forums/t/54491.aspx

OK, I did this search -- (pope, popery, papacy, papal,Catholic,Rome) WITHIN 10 words (anti-christ, antichrist) -- in my Library and came up with a list of 66 resources. Sorry, I can't export the list as a bibliography with authors' names and such, because that feature doesn't exist in Logos, though I've just requested it.

One helpful set of resources on this question which is needing a bit of help to get out of Community Pricing is the J. A. Wylie Collection - especially his work on The Papacy.
looks interesting. thanks.
I've expanded somewhat on Bruce's list, except my list is of Puritan authors only except the publisher Richard Owen Roberts for the 6 volumes on Puritan Sermons.
Author:(“Baxter,Richard”, “Brook,Benjamin”, “Brooks,Thomas”, “Bunyan,John”, “Burroughs,Jeremiah”, “Charnock,Stephen”, “Edwards,Jonathan”, “Flavel,John”, “Goodwin,Thomas”, “Hopkins,Ezekiel”, “Howe,John”, “Jacomb,Thomas”, “Manton,Thomas”, “Murray,David”, “Owen,John”, “Polhill,Edward”, "Bradford,John", "Bates,William", "Clarkson,David", “Ridgley,Thomas”, “Scougal,Henry”, "Muffet,Peter", "Jenkyn,William", "Gouge,William", "Greenhill,William", "Marbury,Edward", "Gurnall,William", "Davenant,John", "Bayne,Paul", "Newton,George", "Cotton,John", "Rutherford,Samuel", "Byfield,Nicholas", "Fisher,Edward", "Leighton,Robert", "Poole,Matthew", "Adams,Thomas", "Hardy,Nathanael", "Airay,Henry", "Jewell,John", "Taylor,Jeremy", “Scudder, Henry”, “Sibbes, Richard”, “Swinnock,George”, “Traill,Robert”, “Ussher,James”) OR Publisher:(“Richard Owen Roberts”)
My Puritan Collection is:
Author:("Adams, Thomas", "Airay, Henry", "Bates, William", "Baxter, Richard", "Brook, Benjamin", "Brooks, Thomas", "Bunyan, John", "Burroughs, Jeremiah", "Byfield, Nicholas", "Case, Thomas", "Charnock, Stephen", "Clarkson, David", "Cotton, John", "Crisp, Tobias", "Davenant, John", "Durham, James", "Edwards, Jonathan", "Fisher, Edward", "Flavel, John", "Foxe, John", "Goodwin, Thomas", "Gouge, William", "Greenhill, William", "Gurnall, William", "Hardy, Nathanael", "Henry, Matthew", "Henry, Philip", "Hopkins, Ezekiel", "Howe, John", "Jacomb, Thomas", "Jenkyn, William", "Keach, Benjamin", "Lightfoot, John", "Manton, Thomas", "Marbury, Edward", "Marshall, Walter", "Murray, David", "Owen, John", "Polhill, Edward", "Poole, Matthew", "Reynolds, Edward", "Ridgley, Thomas", "Scougal, Henry", "Scudder, Henry", "Sibbes, Richard", "Smith, Henrie", "Swinnock, George", "Traill, Robert", "Ussher, James") OR series:("Puritan Sermons")
I think that's better, Bruce's and the Faithlife-group's inclusion of J.I Packer (possibly other modern authors I don't recognize) seems somewhat anachronistic to me, however, I believe that then possibly individual works such as Beeke's "Puritan Theology" should be included. It gives the nice quote (emphasis by me):
Apocalyptic writings became popular among the English Puritans. William Perkins (1558–1602), William Twisse (1578–1646), Thomas Goodwin (1600–1680), William Gouge (1575–1653), Franciscus Junius (1545–1602), James Ussher (1581–1656), and Johannes Piscator (1546–1625) wrote various works about millennial expectations.38 Chief among their expectations were three dominant themes. The first was that the pope was the Antichrist, and thus Revelation predicated the eventual collapse of the Roman Catholic Church.39 Gribben notes that Ussher’s identification of the pope as the Antichrist was axiomatic for nearly all the Puritans.40 Based on their historicist readings of Daniel and Revelation, they believed that the papacy, which they considered an embodiment of satanic power, would soon collapse.
Joel R. Beeke and Mark Jones, A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life (Grand Rapids, MI: Reformation Heritage Books, 2012), 778.
- in either collection, Poole's commentary leads the search results for (papacy, pope, pontiff, "bishop of rome") NEAR antichrist but it's not really explained, rather stated as undeniable fact -

Yes, I like your collection much better and have updated mine with this. Thanks.
Good, I'm in on it now. My wife had started to accumulate print copies of Wylie references and I'm not able to wrestle with bound books like I used to do. Thanks!
Yeah it's a great collection. I think it would be worth it for the 2 vol Scots Worthies (once the one book Scottish households would be sure to have after the Bible) or the 3 vol History of Protestantism alone.
