Word Study - Greek

Hi,

When I open a word study from the Exegetical Guide on a Greek word I am not sure which edition of the Greek NT is being searched. Will the result be correct for NA27? Or is the search done on the Greek component of the reverse interlinear of my preferred bible? If the latter, is the Greek of the interlinear the same as NA27?

Secondly, the default for the word study is "All Passages". It gives a higher count than "New Testament", but I can't find what the extra occurrences are.

Finally, can I set the default Greek text for the Word by Word section of the Exegetical Guide to NA27 rather than the reverse interlinear?

Sorry to trouble you with these questions, but I can't find any information in the 'Help' menu.

You specify it (note: my screenshot shows the 6.1 RC, but I'm not aware of any functional changes to this).

See the red box in the Exegetical guide:

when you then do the textual sarch for New Testament, it will retain the Greek NT you selected:

(you may change e.g. to the NA 28 in the Exegetical Guide and it will retain it through the BWS to the search).

Can you give some more info, such as which lemma you studied? Maybe share a screenshot (save as jpg or png and attach to a reply with the forum editor's paperclip icon)?

It will use the RI of the Bible in which you are doing the Exegetical Guide. In the example below this is the ESV but - as you can see from the popup menu - you can change this if required

That depends on the translation - they are based on different base texts. Which translation are you particularly interested in?

You can see the occurrences by clicking on "New Testament". Which word are you doing the search on?

Finally, can I set the default Greek text for the Word by Word section of the Exegetical Guide to NA27 rather than the reverse interlinear?

If you invoke the Exegetical Guide from the right-click menu in a Bible resource it will use that as the base text for the Word by Word section.

If you start the Guide from the Guides menu it will use your highest prioritised Bible (in that language)

From the Exegetical Guide I click on the Lemma for the word I am interested in, hapax (ἁπαξ), which opens the Word Study on 'All Passages'. It reports 17 occurrences. If I open Textual Searches the results are NT 14 in 14 verses; LXX 43 in 37 verses; Apostolic Fathers 2 in 2 verses; Philo 62 in 61 verses.

I can't see what 'All Passages' refers to. I also can't see where it tells me which version of the Greek New Testament is yielding '14 in 14 verses'.

Thanks for your reply. I use either the NRSV or ESV. In an essay, though, I need to specify which Greek NT I have used, and I am not sure how the RI version compares to NA27 or 28.

It is not identical to either. It is exactly the Greek text used by the translators -- and they made some textual criticism choices that don't match NA's

I hope this helps. I think the issue is that the search is including the Apocrypha. The 'graph in the lemma section does not respond to a mouse.

A further thought on the above. If I am right in thinking that the Apocrypha is being used to get to 17 occurrences of hapax I think that shows that Word Study is based on the RI of the preferred bible not on NA27, since the Apocrypha is not in NA27!

The point is that you are in section "Translation" - you can configure which translation to show and it - obviously - allows only RI-enhanced bibles

that they include deuterocanonicals here might be a bug or by design, but strikes me as odd (btw. NRSVCE does show 14 hits)

Thanks again. I think I can see how this works, though I would like to be able to set New Testament as the default search scope and for the lemma search to be on Greek version that is independent of an English translation. I can, of course, open a new search window. I am just lazy!!

If you link your NA27 (or any other Greek NT) to your English Bible, you can run the word study from the NA27. However, you won't get English translations this way, because those are tied to the reverse interlinear of the English Bible you're using. The Bible Word Study module is meant to run with a reverse interlinear.

You could do your own study, however, by clicking on the word you intend to study in the NA27 and use "Search: This resource" (not "Search: this resource (inline)") from the Lemma, and in the search results panel, add an English version (near the top left) to see translation choices in English (or other) Bibles. The downside of doing it this way, is you don't see LXX results (which you can get to in the Bible Word Study at the bottom of the panel under "Textual Searches," if the word occurs in the LXX.)
