I am trying to make a collection of books that are just from reformed guys (Sproul, MacArthur, etc) and I cannot seem to find the right "rule". I tried doing "author:Sproul AND author: MacArthur, but as soon as I enter the AND everything went to zero results. It would be time consuming to build a collection based on aurthos, but if that is the only way I will just have to do it, but what did I do wrong in the "rule" above or is these an easier way to do it. Thank you for your help.

Hi Michael,

You'll have to use authors to build the rule. There isn't a better way.

The problem with your rule is that you should use OR instead of AND. Your rule only matches books that have both Sproul and MacArthur as authors, and very few do.

A better way is to use a list which has comma separated elements inside parentheses:

author:(sproul,macarthur)

You can think of the comma as an OR in this situation, though it doesn't always work the same way as an OR in some situations. The matching isn't case sensitive, by the way.

Also if you want to use first and last names to be more precise, you'll need to put the name inside quote marks. These both work:

author:(sproul,"macarthur, john")

author:(sproul,"john macarthur")

Here's my rule which also uses publishers in addition to authors:

Here is one specifically on Puritans (taken from the list of Puritans in "Meet the Puritans" by Joel Beeke.

It is fairly comprehensive, though feel free to add/subtract to preference. I think a few made the list twice and I don't know an easy way to sort them for doubles, and it doesn't effect the collection so I'm not too worried about it.
