Reftagger - Prevent Tagging of a Verse

I cannot find any documentation that tells how to prevent tagging for a section of text on a post.

There used to be some special shortcodes that prevented a page from being tagged, or a section of a page.

Does anyone know where this is documented. The old reftagger website used to have this info on it.

If it is out there, it should be added to the new website.

On the "Customize" page of RefTagger.com, scroll down to where it says "More advanced settings" and click the "Edit Settings" link.

This will open an extra panel of settings, two of which are "Tags to exclude" and "Classes to exclude":

If you add a CSS class name to the "classes to exclude" section and then apply it to certain elements in your document, RefTagger will ignore those elements.

Those are the global settings. I am refering to inline shortcodes that would allow you to make a section of text be bypassed by the scan.

That is what was on the old site. There also an inline code to wrap around ie. "see verse 1" and you would specify the verse in the shortcode wrapping that text.

Then your intention is to force RefTagger to tag a section of text as a particular verse?

Found a plugin that adds that type code to be able to do that. Will check it out, but will also look at the site for the markup.

I went to the reftagger setting in the wordpress plugin and they do not match those on the custumization page.

This is the settings for the plugin.

They are different and do not have the Classes to Exclude which I could use to do the same. I could make a class called "No-Reftagger" and wrap my text area in a html div with class="No-Reftagger". I think that would work.

How is the settings that are showing on the cutomize page references?

Also the plugin has not been updated for over a year.

Are there plans for keeping the plugins updated? Clearly the settings are outdated and do not reflect what is currently available on the reftagger.com/customize/ page.

@William, I just got finished doing that very thing. Perusing the forum to see if there was anything I needed to fix, aside from what I had already done, when I found your post. I'd love for you to test it. You can find it here https://github.com/thebrandonallen/reftagger/tree/various-fixes-and-improvements if you're interested. You will have to manually update it by downloading the zip and replacing the current version with the new version via FTP. If parts of that didn't make sense, then maybe hold off for an official version.

@David, who would I need to contact about getting the updated version uploaded to the WP.org plugin repo?

Another suggestion that would help. Adding a class requires a little advanced html knowledge and coding skills. It;s a great workaround, but for easy of use, could you make a shortcode to use when bypassing scanning?

Need a single shortcode or something to totally stop scanning of an entire page. Like a scan no further code or something. If you put it before other body html, it would stop any scanning of the page, or could put it later in body to stop scanning beyond that point. Total flexiblity would be gaining if had [stop-reftagger] and [start-reftagger] code to start or stop whenever needed.

Another would be like a html tag that would suppress scanning within that tag.

For example, it would just add [no-reftagger]example Jn 3:16[/no-reftagger} when in the editor working on post or page.

Or could you add a tag to the editor pulldown ie no-reftagger (like the header tags) that you could use to tag a section of text. Or a button on edit to wrap code around a selected piece of text.

Do you see where I'm going with this?

There used to be a bit of code to allow a user to set his own prefered version of bible. I think it was called control panel and could be put in a side widget on joomla or wordpress. Found it on one of my old sites. That would also be a great feature for site like mine that are training sites and each use could have own prefered version. I think it used cookie to keep users corrent version until they updated it. Otherwise defaulted to site default setting.

Started testing your update.

Suggest using longer more descriptive labels on various items with examples. See the old options clip above in my old post. Especially the case sensitivity, tool tip, chapter level tagging descriptions.

Suggest adding tag examples to the right of the box, especially the ones show in the old settings as check boxes, ie bold, italics, etc.

This makes it easier to understand exactly what each item does.

Also it would be nice to have a RESET button to set everything back to the default settings.

@ William,I've updated the plugin to add support for a shortcode to tell Reftagger to ignore content within. That was great idea that I shouldn't have overlooked. Usage - [noreftagger]John 3:16[/noreftagger]. Give it a shot, using the same link as above. Because of the way RefTagger works, making stop/start shortcodes would be overly complicated code to implement when, in it's rendered form, will be the exact same result as using the [noreftagger] shortcode, so you'll have to make do with the one [;)]

As far as the widget goes, I don't have access to anything older than version 1.3 (which is over 6 years old), and there is no widget in any version since then. My guess, if it did previously exist, was that it was removed for a reason. Likely due to the fact that it's use case only served a very small number of people, vs the complexity of maintaining such a thing in the future. As it stands, this is something that could be built on a custom basis, or published to the WP.org repo, but I'm not sure it has a place in the official plugin... for now at least.

On the topic of descriptions. I'm thinking that over. The UI is already crowded, and with multiple ways of testing each individual setting (extra tab with a post page loaded + the refresh button, or visiting the reftagger.com page to name a few). Also, most of the ones you specifically mentioned are located under the advanced settings page. The idea being that if you don't know what they mean, then they are fine to leave alone, and probably should be. I'm definitely working on some language to go in the advanced settings section to convey that message, and I'm also looking to hide those settings as done on reftagger.com.

PS - You mentioned you found the widget on an old site. I really hope that's a local install, rather than a public facing one, because at 6+ years old that's a sitting duck as far as hacking goes. Please, please, pretty please update that thing [:P]

Thanks for the update.... works great, easy to use. This is essentially a start/stop code and can be used that way.

One other scenario with a shortcode. That is the one where you do not want ANY scanning done on a page. Say add a shortcode such as [noreftagger-scan] to the front of a page and it would prevent a page from being scanned or scanned from that point.

The reason this scenario is needed, especially with courseware, which often appends html, ie a test or quiz section to the end of a page/post. I have no control over that and if the test has scripture references in the test, then they could have access to an answer, ie quote a scripture from memory.

If this was added, virtually any scenario could be covered and the rest could be addressed using a plugin to do specialty functions, such as the control panel code.

I am going to look into setting up a plugin to make a widget to give a user the choice of bible version to use. Would just need to set the version on demand and keep a cookie to remember their settings. I'm not total up to speed with building a plugin, but maybe with your coaching or help I could make one. This is one function that definitely is needed on a multiuser site like a training or teaching site. Let me know if you would be able to answer some questions if I have some.

There is a plugin call Reftagger Shortcode that does a specialty function using the semantic Bible markup to add link to a "verse 6" type of link. Are you familiar with it. It creates a short wrap type shortcode to that you have to manually modify in text to add the verse to link to. It works but, requires html editing. They use this code [reftagger title="Jn 3:16"]verse 16[/reftagger]. That is converted to the semantic bible markup format.

Would this be something that could be folded into your plugin, Say you would use [reftagger verse="Jn 3:16"]verse 16[/reftagger] as the shortcode, with word verse instead of title, which makes more sense.

Just another thought.

Yes, the page scanning is handled by the RefTagger.js that's loaded in the footer of your site. To turn that off you could add a function to your theme's functions.php like so

You could definitely put the code in a plugin, it's just normally easier to do one-off code like that in your theme's function.php. Plugins require plugin headers and such, where as using the function.php file, you can just copy and paste.

It cannot be something you add inline with the page HTML. For one, WordPress is dynamic, and two, the Reftagger.js code is added via PHP, so it needs to be removed via PHP.

I have hundreds of scripture that I am referring to and hundreds more where I am providing both the scripture and its scripture source within WebPlus, a WYSIWYG platform. Is their a simple way to disarm Logos from opening when not wanted, such as underling the scripture source (John 3:16)?

Or the reverse, is there a way to underline only the scripture source that I do want to open?

Noticed the plugin has not been updated on WordPress Plugins for over 2 yrs.

Have the updates mentioned above been added Reftagger, and when would plugin be updated on WordPress?

I have modified version I was given but it has error on var defines that I noticed when I created a child theme and the error was triggered.
