Screen card?

Hi there and thanx for your help.

Logos 4
Win XP Prof SP3
Pentium 4, 3.4GHz
2.5GB RAM (XP registers 2.43GB RAM)
Graphics Display: On Board
PSU: 450W

I have added 1.5GB o RAM to this machine because it was terribly slow. It feels as if it made no difference.

Can it be because I do not have a proper screen card?

Thanx for your help.

Graphics will be a bottleneck on your laptop (I'm assuming), also your hard drive is probably 5400 RPM, Logos performs better on a 7200 RPM HD. Finally, your P4 is a single core (I believe) Logos runs better on multiple cores. Your system isn't close the the recommended hardware (see: http://www.logos.com/support/techfaq

    Doen,

Most software consumers are unaware that "minimum system requirements" simply mean the software will run on their computer, but the software will run unexceptionally slow or if it is a game the graphic quality will be about equal to a 1980's video arcade game. The only realistic "minimum system requirement" is the "recommended" one. In other words, the software manufacture is telling you, if you really want to enjoy using this software we recommend that you have a system with at least this configuration. There for the realistic base system of Logos 4 is as follows:

    Core2 Duo
    3GB RAM
    Windows Vista Or Windows 7
    DVD drive
    1280X1024 display
512MB DirectX9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
20 GB hard drive space on local drive (May require additional space depending on your library).

As you can see you are short in CPU power, memory, OS, and most importantly graphic card. My guess is if you installed a graphic card you would notice a dramatic improvement. A mother board as old as yours must have terrible integrated graphics (probably 4 to 5 generations old).

Before you put too much money into this old system consider this. For only $400-$500 you can purchase a computer that can easilly blow you current computer out of the water.  Then put in a dedicated video card for around $100 and you will have a system that will run L4 very well.

Hi Kevin and thanx  for your help.

Yes, I know my desktop is way under. This is my machine at the office on which I do about 5% of my work. My personal PC spec much better and works perfect.

Since this is not my own machine I can not "chop & change" as I want to, hence the reason for adding my own RAM. I was just thinking that by moving to a better screen card can spare me some frustration.

    Regards,

Deon, I don't know how quick you need to your office machine to speed up. But, you might want to check out this thread. http://community.logos.com/forums/t/10098.aspx Logos is working on a browser version of L4. Granted they can't serve up all the books online and it's still very beta, but something like this would be better for a slow machine than sticking new components in an old machine.

May I suggest a better solution--Logos 3! We all tend to forget that everyone who purchases Logos 4 has the rights to download L3 and uses almost all the resources that they purchased with L4 on L3.

Here is the web link to the latest version of L3: http://www.logos.com/support/downloads/ldls

Here is the blog post explaining how to download L4 resources to L3: http://blog.logos.com/archives/2009/12/using_your_new_logos_4_resources_in_logos_3_or_logos_for_mac_1.html

    Hope this helps.

It's amazing how quickly we forget what an amazing program L3 is.  L4 is so much better for most of us.  But in this situation, L3 would be perfect.  Way to go Keith!

I have a computer similar to the one described, and Logos4 runs painfully painfully slow.

Logos3 is slow too, but less so.

I can't wait til Logos is available as a web app, as that could be better handled on machines like this.

Good day and thanx again for the advise.

I am busy downloading Logos 3. Is there a way I can "import" my complete Library from either a external HDD backup I have or Logos 4 installed on my desktop. To download something I already have does not make sense.

You can point the Location Manager toward the L4 folder with the resources in it. However, keep in mind that the new .logos4 file format cannot be read by version 3. You will need to either get a resource CD or download those titles that you don't have in the old Libronix format from the ftp server. See: http://blog.logos.com/archives/2009/12/using_your_new_logos_4_resources_in_logos_3_or_logos_for_mac_1.html

May I suggest that you might be better served in the long run by copying all the L3 format files in your L4 resource directory to your L3 resource directory and then start up L3 and close it and then use the link on the blog to download any remaining files to L3. The reason you need to start and close L3 before you click the blog update link is because if L3 does not "discover" the new resources in its directory it will download them all over again.

Now as for the reason that I suggest you copy the L3 files to the L3 directory rather than just pointing Location Manager to them. I believe I read somewhere that Logos plans over time to update all the old L3 files to the new L4 format. Then means over time the L3 files will slowly start disappearing from your L4 directory and your version 3 will lose access to them. I tried without success to find the Blog post that mentions this, but I am fairly certain that this is the case. If someone can confirm or deny this it would be helpful to many people who are running both L3 and L4.

The location manager copies files from a location to the Libronix resource folder. It is different from telling Libronix from use another folder to store book files.

You are correct. I was thinking of the Tools|Options|Resource Paths. How quickly we forget! [:)]
