I'm confused on whether the Thru the Bible Commentary is included in the McGee Lifeworks or not. At first I thought it was, and that Logos should quit selling the more expensive, since they are selling a better and cheaper alternative as the Lifeworks. But at second thought, I'm wondering if the Thru the Bible Commentary Unabridged is DIFFERENT than the The Complete Thru the Bible Series that is included in the Lifeworks. Or are they SAME and the Lifeworks being a great deal?

They are at least different in that the more expensive one is one large file. The lifeworks version has 60 separate "Thru the Bible" files (in that way they are similar to the printed booklets version).
But, yes, I too would be interested in a "behind the scenes" description/explanation for the reasons/benefits of one versus the other. I have the Commentary" as it came in one o my "sets of something." The lifeworks appeals to me do to the other titles which it includes of McGee's writings.

from what i could determine, they're the same. i recently bought the lifeworks library and, as steve said, it's just broken into individual volumes, but still work as a single book within the program

Steve do you happen to know why the "Portfolio" has only one item by McGee. I'd much prefer him to some of the other titles that Logos packaged.

Apparently, the "MeGee Lifeworks" is not available for L4.

I think buying the CD 3.0 version would transfer find to Logos 4 just like the other Libronix 3.0 books do.

I had the Lifeworks in L3 and they all transferred to L4 when I made the upgrade, so as long as you have L3 on your computer you shouldn't have any problem installing them in L3 and L4 picking them up.
The reason they are probably not included in the Portfolio is the type of commentary they are.
From the Commentary introduction: "These are popular messages, prepared originally for a radio audience. They should not be considered a commentary on the entire Bible in any sense of that term. These messages are devoid of any attempt to present a theological or research and study in order to interpret the Bible from a popular rather than from a scholarly (and too–often boring) viewpoint. NO but Most McGee material was packages by a "sister-company" which put it out as one of their "Life Accumulation" sets (Sorry for not "naming" these properly due to new forum rules).
Because this other company appears to hold the "rights" to "McG'ee' Logos may not have freedom to "throw them into the pot" etc?
And no, I've no idea if that is the case, just speculating...

Funny, I never thought interesting had to be at the expense of scholarly. I am happy I had already separately purchased McGee's commentary (& Harry Ironside's complete set. ) They make a great addition to the content in my Portfolio Edition. I have always viewed Thru the Bible as more devotional since it is a five year run in a 15 minute daily radio spot. I still learned a lot and the "cookies" were yummy. [:P]
I wonder though if the Unabridged content is somehow different than the 60 volume paperback set. Here's why:
The Nelson 501 Book Unlock (501 Vols.) http://www.logos.com/products/details/5905
has both the 60 volume paperback set & the 5 volume Unabridged hardback set included.
Why do that unless there is some difference? I don't know.

I have the life works on Libronix which is the individual books and I have the 5 volume in hardback on my shelf and I just took a quick look through them side by side and didn't see any difference. Now that doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be a difference in the Libronix version but I would wonder why if there was.

I owned both the 5 volume hardback & the 60 volume paperback sets in "dead tree" format and never noticed a difference. I thought it was done to enable carrying around a small book versus the larger & heavier books. The print size was larger in the paperback. But I am still confused why Nelson would include both in their "501 title unlock" and especially why they call the 5 volume set "UN-ABRIDGED." Does that not imply there is an abridged version?
I had a couple half-way reasonable excuses for buying both the hardback and softcover sets. (Size, convenience, readability) But I cannot figure why both sets are included in the "Nelson 501 Title Unlock" if there is no difference in content.
A related example is having the full set of Kittle and the abridged volume both in my library. My wife thinlks it is silly but it makes sense to me. [:^)]

Jason, here is a quote from Thomas' website:
"A complete reference edition of the 60-volume Thru the Bible commentary series, this five-volume set is an excellent choice if you need a complete Bible commentary in durable hardcover bindings. It includes Dr. McGee's insightful study of each book of the Bible with in-depth, paragraph-by-paragraph discussions of key verses and passages. Purchase the entire five-volume set or collect them individually as your study progresses."
The difference is the binding and the type of paper, etc. They are the same according to the publisher!

The hardback 5 volume set preceeded the paperback set's publication by a few decades. The original set was not called "Un-Abridged" for the obvious reason it was the only edition. But when the paperback series was published, the hardback series was touted as the "Un-Abridged" edition for some reason. I wonder what that reason was. (To sell two sets to every reader?)
However it is interesting to note the J. Vernon McGee Lifeworks collection 1.0 and 2.0 are almost exactly the same content. There are just a couple titles different. Whereas the MacArthur Lifeworks 1.0 & 2.0 are remarkably different content. Same goes for the Charles Stanley Lifeworks collections 1.0 & 2.0. But we concede these two gentlemen are still alive and turning out great material. Dr. McGee has been gone for a while.

It appears they've now pulled Lifeworks. The link posted above now refers to the more expensive edition with a note stating that a new version of Lifeworks is under development.

"Usually" these are seen as different products. On occasion a company might give a discount on the newer product if you can prove you bought the previous one (ie, "Z's" discount on its new Logos versions for former "P____s" owners etc)

At the Logos link http://www.logos.com/ebooks/details/THRU_BIB it states as follows:
"Looking for The McGee Lifeworks Library? If so, please note that The McGee LifeWorks Library has been discontinued. An updated version is in the works, but no release date has been provided. Included in the McGee Lifeworks Library was the Thru the Bible Commentary collection found on this page."
So the Thru the Bible Commentary in the McGee Lifeworks Collection is the SAME as the unabridged edition in the link above. So if you have the McGee Lifeworks Collection (which is now discontinued) you purchased it at a great price since now the Thru the Bible Commentary alone is $174.99.
So if you are wanting the Collection, it might be worth an internet search.

Timothy, just a polite heads-up - I don't think Logos (understandably) likes competitor products being advertised on its forum! I believe it's mentioned in the forum guidelines. [:)]

The Thru the Bible Commentary is include in the McGee Lifeworks.
Dr. McGee was a fine Bible teacher and commentator. His "commentary" is basicly expository preaching, and many people love it. It is not a scolarly commentary, and that is not its purpose. Dr. McGee never claimed that it was. It is more like James Boice's expository commentaries. Dr. McGee accomplishes his purpose well.
Dr. McGee is dispensational in his understanding of Scripture, and anyone of that persuasion would probably enjoy his work. He communicates well to lay people.
This work is often on sale from Logos and from other third party sellers at great discounts.
