I wonder how the specs compare to some of the Dell tablets? Any thoughts from existing owners of the Dells?

Remember: Only Surface Pro tablets are capable of running Logos. So the answer is "no."
EDIT: Actually, just re-reading, it says that it runs full windows... so I don't know if it is capable of running Logos or not. I do know, however, that the $499 only comes with 64GB storage and 2 GB ram, so my "no" remains.
According to the story it is running full windows. How would it know not to run Logos. Though the storage may be a bit tough at 4GB of memory and a 128GB SSD for the more expensive one.

As I said in my revised statement... I am unsure if that is true. I am leaning towards "I'm wrong." It looks like they have gone in a new direction.

Which is what I was hinting at. That would stink, so certainly not "ideal."
I am glad to see the improvements brought to the surface, but still not planning on trading off for my iPad 3rd generation anytime soon. Mobile is far less than ideal but at the current point in time provides me all i really need.

I may be off in the wrong direction, but I'm thinking it will be a question of how responsive it would be with the quad core Atom processor.
I run Verbum on a low end laptop with only 4GB of memory and a traditional hard drive. My library is 22GB. Verbum runs fine. Yes, it could be a little snappier - whish I had an SSD and 4 more gigs of memory, but it works.
I would think the Dell tablets with the Core-M processors might be better but I guess we will have to wait and see.

IDEAL? ... I think we are eons away from a machine that is ideal for every need. There seem to be tradeoffs in every one. The tradeoff in the ones that get the closet to ideal is the price. I do suspect that the surface 3 will occupy it's share of the market.
Personally, I think the atom processor is better suited for the 8 inch tablets. (Pocket Rockets) In the 10 inch plus range, I would spend a bit more and get an i3.
The Dell Venue 8 Pro 64 GB with 2 GB ram runs Logos just fine. It shares the same Atom processor.
Are you sure it has the same cpu? The Surface has a Quad-core Intel Atom x7-Z8700. I'm looking at the Dell website and it is showing a Quad-core Intel Atom Z3735G. Maybe it's a typo.
If that is what each have respectively then the Surface 3 will be getting nice bump in performance comparing the two on the Intel site. Either way, that would be good news based on your favorable experience with the Venue Pro 8.
The Surface 3 has one of a newer generation of Atom processors that are a step up from what the Dell Venue 8 Pro and similar 8 inch Windows tablets have. 4 GB of RAM is also a step up. What isn't clear from Microsoft's site is whether the Surface 3 has a true SSD like the Surface Pro has. If it does, I would expect good performance and good battery life. It won't match a Surface Pro with 8 GB of RAM and an i5 or i7 processor, but it should do just fine for email, web browsing, word processing and light gaming. It should also handle Logos, but it will be a bit slower than the Surface Pro would be. I think the Surface 3 has a niche and some real potential. It will be interesting to see how it sells. For those who can't afford the Pro, this might work.

For mobility my Asus Vivo Tab Note 8, 32 bit, Windows 8.1, 64 GB, Atom (I haven't bothered to check which Atom) does me much better than what is now my wife's iPad Mini. Having everything with me and everything connecting with everything else is great offline and on the go. It was $299 from the Microsoft Store last November. A case with keyboard added about $30.

I'm glad that your Dell Venue 8 Pro is working out well for you. It's a good little tablet. It's tough to beat it for the price. I had one for a time, and was pleased with it.
I don't know how much better these newer Atom processors will be, but they should give at least a small bump up in performance, especially with the 4 GB model. Not long ago, I picked up a used Lenovo ThinkPad 8 on eBay. It has an 8.3 in. screen, slightly larger than the Dell. It's a version not sold in the USA now. It has an Atom Z3795 processor (just a smidgeon above the Dell), but 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage, and a screen with a 1920 x 1200 display. The display is great for reading. The speakers are not good, even by tablet standards, and battery life is worse than the Dell. But it handles Logos a bit faster than the Dell, so I assume that the Surface 3 should be a bit better still.
As you say, one big advantage to these little Windows slates is the ability to take our whole Logos library with us in a small package. We can also do passage guides and the like offline, which the mobile apps on Android and iOS can't do.

That was a great buy - and with Office Home and Student, too! Can't beat it.
I wouldn't have bought the Lenovo new. Way too much money. It's good, but not that good!

Ok, here is the solution to the problem.
Get me a Surface Pro 3, the Surface 3 and a Mac book Pro.
I will try all three and write up a full review.
