Other than the quirks of Android devices, why is it that Android tablet makers get cold feet in updating their OS. Is it really that hard? Only Google seems like it wants to keep their machines up to date.

I have a like new iPod touch that I can't use, as I would like, because Apple will not provide iOS updates for it and will not host apps for the older iOS versions.

The much maligned Microsoft provided years of app compatibility as WinCE\PocketPC OSs and hardware matured.

I have been pleased with the support for Android OS upgrades HTC  has provided.

Relating this to Faithlife products, until recently keeping up with mobile has been more inconvenient than keeping the desktop going.

My first gen Nexus 7 is now on 5.1. It's very good and makes me appreciate the improvements a lot. As it stands I don't see any effort for other new machines to even offer 5. Weird.

My Note 3 received the 5.0 update yesterday.

Sadly my 2 year old Note 8.0 looks dead with respect to updates. And it appears Samsung will not produce midsize Note tablet any longer.
