Did not merge indexes automatically

I was doing a search today, and got a message something like "will not be complete until indexing is finished".  I had to option to have it start indexing, which I did, took 23 minutes.

It's not a big issue, I just thought that the updates indexed automatically unless I told it to stop.  Is this suppose to be automatic?  L4.0b beta 5(4.02.3.5543) on w7/64.

It was disclosing an option to merge indexes so that search results will not be split between "Library Results" and  the "New Resources" section. The latter can be confusing because it is not only new but updated resources whose results appear there.

If you have a single index you only see Library Results. When you change/add resources they are quickly indexed into a "supplemental" index and their results, plus the merge warning, then apppear in "New Resources". When the supplemental gets to a certain size another download will merge the indexes. You can always elect to Merge Index to get back to a single index or Rebuild Index which has the same result but re-indexes everything, taking longer. There have been problems with the merge in 4.0a and the workaround is to rebuild the index.

Merge Index and  Rebuild Index have to be entered into the Command bar.

It was on the wiki but I just re-organised the info to make it clearer! See http://wiki.logos.com/Installation_and_Indexing_FAQ%27s
