[resolved] 6.3 Beta 2: My experience with restart-less updates

So I purchased two different books to test the restart-less update feature of 6.3.

the first book I purchased was text only and small and shortly after purchasing just magically appeared in my library. Good job.

Then a purchased a larger book with lots of photos (https://vyrso.com/product/30730/the-action-bible-gods-redemptive-story) to test what would happen with a book that took longer to download. The results weren't as good on this on:

Observation:

  • When I searched for it in the library while it was downloading, nothing appeared to show me that I had purchased it. It would be good if it showed me the title and had a progress meter to show the progress downloading it (similar to what shows up on iOS home screen when downloading apps). I did however get an indication from the triangle icon that a 500 MB file was downloading.
  • After the download completed I searched multiple times in the Library area for my book before it finally appeared. I'm not sure what finally made it appear, but there was definitely a significant delay between the download completing and index starting and when the book finally was available in my library.

Suggestions:

  • For large resources: Have the resource appear immediately in the library with a download progress indicator.
  • Once a book has been purchased: Have a pop up appear that the book has been purchased, is downloading, and is available. I wasn't sure what was going on or what to do when I purchased the book.

I think that delay is somewhat normal, but I agree it would be better handled as you suggest.

Yes, and even more similar to the way the Kindle app (my experience with it is mostly on Windows) shows you a progress bar when a book is downloading...

...which changes to a New bar once it has completed downloading:

This is a timeline of significant events for LLS:9781434702395

    • Download started                        20:38:53
    • Download finished                       20:45:43
    • Initial Discovery complete            20:46:26
    • Indexer started                            20:46:28
    • Library Catalog updated               20:47:06
    • Resource was indexed by            20:46:39
    • Tried to send resource to Kindle   20:47:18
    • Discovery Stage complete           20:47:21
    • Opened resource panel                20:47:21
    • Tried to send resource to Kindle   20:47:21
    • Indexing complete                       20:53:37

When I searched for it in the library while it was downloading, nothing appeared

    This wasn't promised

    • After the download completed I searched multiple times in the Library area for my book before it finally appeared.

Download complete to Discovery stage complete was 1m 38s (53s after the indexer started). It was opened immediately after this.

he first book I purchased was text only and small and shortly after purchasing just magically appeared in my library

This resource took 57s (54s after indexer started) to be completely discovered but you waited over 4m before opening it.

If it was available in Library after initial discovery then it would have taken 2s after downloading, whereas the larger resource would need 43s.

Seeing it in Library ("magically appeared") suggests you didn't have to 'look' or 'search' whereas 'searching' for the other resource via a filter would be unsuccessful until the discovery stage was complete (1m 38s) but it would still have taken longer to "magically" appear (43s).

Those are my suppositions, so we'll have to wait for the developer to know if there is anything unusual.

What are the titles of the resources (LLS:BBLST175STRSBBL, LLS:9781434702395 )?

It would be good if it showed me the title and had a progress meter to show the progress downloading it (similar to what shows up on iOS home screen when downloading apps). I did however get an indication from the triangle icon that a 500 MB file was downloading.

The triangle icon (notification icon) is intended to be the main place where progress is displayed for updating. This is unchanged from previous versions of the application.

Our current intent on this is that with auto-updating turned on, updates should be a background task that isn't "in your face". We do provide increased visibility in a couple situations. If you manually use "update now" or "update resources" command, then you will see a notification bar at the top of  the main window indicating update progress. You will see this same notification bar if you have auto-updates turned off, and you initiate an update using the link in the "available updates" notification.

After the download completed I searched multiple times in the Library area for my book before it finally appeared. I'm not sure what finally made it appear, but there was definitely a significant delay between the download completing and index starting and when the book finally was available in my library.

You should have had a yellow notification in your library indicating that the library was not yet up to date. Once this goes away, all new resources should be available in the library. After downloading completes, there is a "preparing library" stage that must be completed before the resource becomes visible to the rest of the application. If you are downloading a number of new books, some may be added to the library throughout the update process rather than waiting until all of them are downloaded.

For large resources: Have the resource appear immediately in the library with a download progress indicator.

Unfortunately, it isn't possible at this time for undownloaded resources to be visible in the library.

Once a book has been purchased: Have a pop up appear that the book has been purchased, is downloading, and is available. I wasn't sure what was going on or what to do when I purchased the book.

Thanks for the feedback. I've seen someone else request this kind of thing as well. I will pass it along. I agree that for purchased books it would be nice to have a little more visibility into when your book is ready to read.

Ahh! I think it says something about updating the Library catalog?

Could you relate these two stages to my event timeline above. Thanks.

The notification in the library panel will be visible from shortly after any update project starts:
    UpdatePipelineManager | Starting update project.20:16:41, 20:30:35, 20:38:53

Until shortly after all update projects finish:
UpdatePipelineManager | All update projects have finished.
    20:16:43, 20:30:39, 20:46:26

Technically the ones before 20:16:45 don't count because that's the point where the main window becomes visible.

The "preparing library" stage is everything in the log marked with DiscoveryUpdateStage. I believe things will show up in the library panel some time after the following message:
Updating Library Catalog from Resource Manager
    20:16:43, 20:31:19, 20:46:26, 20:47:16

The library panel doesn't update immediately in order to limit refreshes while you are trying to use the library.
