DESIGN: Newsfeed

I am not a big fan of "newsfeeds" in general, and particularly not how they are implemented in Faithlife. It seems to be a random compilation of mostly useless stuff. For example:

I have no idea who "grippit" is. I don't care what book (s)he is reading. I don't care what (s)he has to say about said book. Does "grippit" know that I am reading his/her post? Is someone reading my post(s) without my knowledge?

Another thing: The news feed is just too plain confusing. Good design MUST start with the four basic principles of design:

  • Contrast
  • Repetition
  • Alignment
  • Proximity

The various posts and replies just all run together. It is awful. Perhaps the OP's can have some sort of colored box... something to give it contrast to the responses. Maybe add a little extra padding before and after each [thread?]. Also, the OP avatars need to be larger. They are too similarly sized to the response avatars.

Posts in Faithlife appear from users that belong to groups you have also joined. If your hover over the user's name, a popup should appear that highlights the group you have in common. This post is a community note that was shared to their "My Faithlife" feed, which makes it visible to everyone who is in a group with them. Your privacy settings can be changed so you can control who sees your posts to "My Faithlife".

What if I don't want to see that junk? I am thinking of using Faithlife for some projects I am involved with. In my small group, I would feel comfortable with any member sharing anything they wanted to that group only. I have a larger group environment, and I would NOT want just anyone to be able to share things. I would not want members being spammed about "Joey joined a reading plan." I would not want theological or political debates filling up notes in someone's bible!

I still don't know why I see "grippit's" comment (or highlight?) Was it because they made a comment while signed in to this group? Can users be blocked from making comments? If so, why isn't that turned off in this group (Faithlife Mobile Apps Beta)?

I didn't catch that before. This is disconcerting. It annoys me that I am seeing "grippits" comment, but going forward I am very unlikely to use Faithlife with groups if I couldn't disable that.

I don't want "crazy john" spamming everyone with his delusional rants. I don't want aunt mary's prayer request for her next door neighbor's college roommates best friends dog who has to be put down.

I agree. If we were only part of groups with people we actually knew (eg. small groups at church) it wouldn't be so bad. But Faithlife has expanded beyond its intent with groups like Faithlife Beta, Faithlife 101. Now I want to remain in those groups because they are active and useful. But I do wish there was a way to customize what we see in our newsfeed. I believe Facebook is able to do that.

The best way to do this is to become "Followers" of groups with people you don't know personally. "Members" can see each others' posts to "My Faithlife", but "Followers" can't.

We are working on improving feed tuning, but today this is the best way to remove "My Faithlife" posts that you don't want to see.

Isn't it possible that would remove some of your functionality within said group?
