Question About Use on Tablet Type PC

Forum Note

I have been using Logos on both my Notebook and Desktop for some time now and have benefitted from it a great deal. However, I have found times that I have considered a Tablet as a third tool. Can I get some input on how well Logos 6 or if it works on an inexpensive Tablet. I have an opportunity to pick up a Windows 8.1 Tablet with 16 gig of internal storage, has 1 gig of ram, and can be expanded up to 32 gig of storage. It also comes with Office 365 for a year. All less than $100.00. It is not intended to be my main pic but there are times I want to continue working while I'm waiting in the doctor's office, in the park or wherever I may find myself where it is inconvenient to even use my notebook.

The main applications I am interested in using is Office 2010 or Office 365, Logos 6, Vyrso, the Internet and Evernote. Is there even enough storage to make this usable?

The November, 2014, edition of this article helped me find a very satisfactory tablet: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2417564,00.asp

I have the Asus Vivo Tab Note 8 with 64 GB. I wouldn't consider anything less than 64 GB.

    Rev. Michael L. Burns,

You may want to look through the various forum posts referencing Win tablets.  There are recent ones in this forum discussing the Surface 3 that contain comments also about the HP Stream and Asus tablets in context.  There are comments on others as well.  You can also find some in the Windows App Store forum.  Some of them talk about the hardware, some get into the performance of Logos/Verbum.

I think what you will find is that performance of Logos/Verbum on some of them is adequate but there are some minimum hardware requirements that you need to consider beforehand ... even if you're just looking for reading capabilities.

I think you will also find the consensus on the hardware specs for the tablet you are looking at to be inadequate (you mention both 16 and 32GB of storage, 1GB RAM, and no CPU spec).  Those in that "category" having low disk and memory can be useful for using the Office apps and internet access/browsing, but have some significant limitations for other things including Logos/Verbum.

Hope that helps.  Good luck in your search.

Logos 6 will not run well on any of these Atom based tablets. That's the processor. To get a really great Logos 6 experience on a tablet, get the Surface PRO 3, not the Surface 3. The jury is still out on the Surface 3, a lower price version of the Surface Pro 3. It has an Atom processor so it will likely not run that well. I have tried it on HP Stream, Dell Venue 8, and Toshiba Encore 2 Write, all bad experiences with Logos 6.

Now Logos has removed the Logos mobile app from the Windows App store so you can't even enjoy just the book reading capabilities of that terrible app.

However, you can get a decent Logos Mobile app (actually better than decent) on an iPad or an Android tablet. The iPad app is always a step ahead of the Android app in development with few exceptions. Plus the iPad and Android apps let you download just the library books you need, conserving storage space for other things, like other apps or media.

I wouldn't want to run Logos 6 on that tablet, unless it's an Android tablet, then it should do fine. You don't say what OS it runs. What's your budget and what kind of desktop or laptop do you use? What kind of phone? Those will all effect recommendations. I'm happy to offer a recommendation. In my avocation I review tablets and have tried out dozens of them. If I were recommending them today, I'd pick ...

    1. Windows - Surface Pro 3 unless budget matters, ten get Surface 3 or Toshiba Encore 2 Write

    2. Android - Nexus 9, Nexus 7 if you want smaller, Galaxy Tab S 10.5 or 8.4 for a beautiful screen or Kindle Fire if you don't care about Android that much

    3. iOS - iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3, but original iPad Air and iPad 4 will do as will iPad mini 2 to save money.

I use both a HP Desktop and HP Notebook, both running Windows 8.1. I use a Galaxy S3 phone and an iPad 3 at times as well, all running Logos. The iPad has served me well when using my Notebook wasn't convenient. However, there are times I miss the layout function available in windows and not available on the iPad. However, there are times I want to continue doing some work using a familiar layout while I wait for someone to come out of the store or while setting on the patio or the likes, either of which does not lend itself conveniently to using my Notebook. The tablet I was looking at is on sale for $79 and I have a $10 off coupon. Again, I'm not looking to replace my Desktop, Notebook or even my iPad. I am only considering a low cost, occasional use alternative and a familiar functionality to my Desktop.

    Hi Michael,

There is no real middle ground in functionality available today that would seem to fit your requirement.  Given that you want the Logos/Verbum desktop layout functionality you will need to use the desktop version of Logos/Verbum.  The mobile OS versions will not meet your requirement.  The specs on the tablet you list are not sufficient for Logos/Verbum with the desktop user experience you are requesting.

Kevin is offering the best and most sensible advice.  Please follow his recommendations and other comments he and others have made in other posts regarding tablets.

We understand its an unwanted compromise.  The price of desktop functionality in an extremely portable device is the cost of duplicating the desktop in hardware capability.  Surface Pro 3, some kind of UltraBook, MacBook Air, etc.

Just to clarify. The Allwinner processor powers Android tablets, so it cannot possibly run desktop Logos

The "Intel" processor brand is misleading as they have nothing to do with the Allwinner company/brand.

Thanks for pointing this out David. This was actually a misprint on the site from which I took it. The tablet actually is:

    • Model number: TRIO PRO-8
    • 8” HD IPS touch screen
    • Resolution: 1280x800
    • Quad-core Intel Atom processor
    • 1GB RAM
    • 16GB hard drive
    • Comes with a Microsoft Office 365 one-year free trial
    • Windows 8.1 operating system
    • 2MP rear and 1.3MP front cameras

I am disabled and on a very limited income and the cheap price was what caught my eye the most as well as it being a windows tablet and my hopes of a more desktop like experience. As I mentioned earlier the cost was $79 and I had a $10 discount coupon.

At this point I will probably just stick with my iPad.

The specs still look suspect to me. So stay with what you have.

Your iPad, as long as you have wifi, will do much better than trying to squeeze a big desktop app into a cheapie PC tablet. I have the ESV Study Bible and Mounce's Dictionary in an iPod Touch. How cool is that!

Kevin my wife has an older surface RT and I am looking into a Surface Pro2 256 GB running windows 8.1.  Will this work OK with the LOGOS software?

    Thank you

For clarification: Logos does not run on "RT" devices.
