What do you recommend for a "Put on" "Put off" search?

Dear Fellow Users,

In Eph 4:22, God (via Paul) tells us to "Put on" (ἐνδύω) the new man.

In Col 3:12 God tells us to put on compassionate hearts...etc.

I'm thinking it would be neat to do a sermon series on "What not to Wear" and "What to Wear" based on the "Put on" and "Put off".

Obviously, I can search the lemma and find a quick list of all the occurrences of (ἐνδύω). But I'm wondering if I might miss something.
Would you please suggest some alternate search parameters that will help me chase down a thorough and perhaps even exhaustive list of all the "Put on" and "Put off" commands or commendations?

Thank you!

In Christ,

Jeremy Lobdell

    Hi Jeremy

Can I suggest that there is a flow to Paul's letter, so Eph 2 describes what we're putting off (our broken humanity), such that what we're putting on is Jesus himself (our resurrected humanity, as defined in 2:15).

In other words, don't just search for ἐνδύω, but also for how ἄνθρωπος is used in Eph as well. It's the change of ἄνθρωπος (from broken humanity to restored humanity) that is the object of ἀποτίθημι / ἐνδύω.

This is where the Bible Sense Lexicon can help you. If you right-click on "put on" in Eph 4:24, you'll see the sense "to be imparted ⇔ be clothed", and you can search for that in the Bible. In this case, it doesn't give you any more results than the lemma, but it is much more focussed than the lemma, and easier to identify what you're looking for (although potentially you'll miss some metaphors such as "Put on the whole armour of God").

You can also open the Bible sense lexicon, and see other, related senses (look under the "relationships" section). That will help you to see if there are similar meanings that perhaps you're missing, and you could search for them if you wish.

Finally, you could type "clothe" into the BSL to get other suggestions that you can follow up.

Can combine Bible Sense Lexicon searches using OR:

    <Sense to stop a state ⇔ take off> OR <Sense to stop utterly ⇔ kill> OR <Sense to be imparted ⇔ be clothed> OR <Sense to be at peace> OR <Sense to strive after ⇔ chase> OR <Sense to rejoice together> OR <Sense to be thankful>
