I thought this theological verse was a good fit for the Verse of the Day...
P R E V A I L
Unworthy he, of least of all the deeds
The steadfast, faithful love of God had wrought
Now, poised to reap that night those bitter seeds
Sown selfish through the years, his only thought
Of heeding self, heedless of other’s needs
Now faces the Jabbok Judge!
The nameless nemesis approached, stood fast
Closed, then grappled with the fear-filled one
The struggle with Lord Consequence would last
One who’d not be cheated nor outrun
Until the dawn, when chastened Jacob cast
His desperate plea!
Face to face with Fear. Self. Sin. Shame.
Isaac’s son found himself in a new place
Confessing, repenting of a name
Too fitting and fit only for disgrace
“You’re Israel now!” God would proclaim
The foe he could not best!
We too, struggle long into our night
Grappling with ourselves, what we’ve become
Must resolve to not give up the fight
Weary yes, yet refusing to succumb
Longing to be blessed at last, to do what’s right
We limp toward home!

And Jacob said, “O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, O LORD who said to me, ‘Return to your country and to your kindred, that I may do you good,’ I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that you have shown to your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear.”
–Genesis 32:9-11
