Is there a way to do a simple word search with only the exact word?
for example - I'm trying to search "providence" but I can't find a way to search without getting results for "provide" "providing" etc. I only want hits for "providence"

Search for it exactly this way, with the quotation marks
Uncheck "match all word forms" in the search pane drop down at the top left of the pane. That should fix the problem.

You're welcome. I normally keep that option selected. I sometimes forget to deselect it when I am searching for something very specific.
