Engine only upgrade?

So I'm at our denomination's annual gathering and because of the discount being offered, I'm considering moving from 5 to 6 as well as upgrading the package I own a couple levels.

That's expensive....even WITH the discount.

My question is when Logos 7 is released will I be able to upgrade to get any new bells and whistles you create without spending thousands on my particular package level. After this, I'm not going to need any more books, I'll just want to use the new tools you create on the books I'll already own.

I've searched around, and I don't see this ability anywhere. Matter of fact, it looks as though the number of new "toys" included is actually dependent on the package. If I'm not wanting to add to my library, this seems a little disingenuous.

As is always the case, the engine is free. You can update to L6 without cost. There will be a number of advantages to doing so. There are also some features which require new datasets. You must pay for those. That isn't "disingenuous," it is how Faithlife stays in business! If you don't want to purchase a new base package, you can buy a crossgrade.

When L7 rolls around, it will be the same.

Don't get me wrong...I won't mind paying for any new functionality.

Is that what a crossgrade is? If I ONLY want new datasets/functionality/tools but not increase my study library is that the route I take?

I'm making faces, but I'll admit I have flirted with that Idea myself. I have something like 11 or 12,000 Logos/vyrso/verbum/noet books, several thousand non-logos e-books, and several thousand dead tree format books. Its to the point where an entire bedroom in my house is a library floor to ceiling books, and the closet converted to a bookshelf, and bookshelves in the hallway, and bookshelves in the living room, and bookshelves (albeit smaller) on my large L shaped desk, and books stacked on my endt ables, counter tops, dresser, hutch, and so forth.

I sat down the other day and figured out that If I red a book a day - it would take around 40 years to read every title I own.

Right after that thought, I bought the classic commentaries and studies collection because in 40 years I'll still need something to read (chuckle). On a more serious note a significant portion of the power of Logos comes from having lots of titles in it. I may never (probably won't) read every title I have in Logos, but as I search Logos will bring up relevant portions of relevant books that will enhance my study of a given topic.

I've come to the decision that as long as new titles are being written that address previously ignored issues of theology, and our blind spots as a church I will probably never stop buy books all together.

Logos features often grow in power as your library grows.

In conclusion I suggest that you grow your collection with precision. Find a guide put out by your seminary (or there is a good one in the files forum from Denver Seminary, or I prefer Danny Akin's Building a Theological Library) and purchase titles that come highly recommended. In my case many titles and sets that I wanted came in base packages, and were cheaper as part of the base package than apart from it. As you can see from my signature I have a few of them now, each purchased for a specific reason, each saved me money (or cost no more than) the parts it included that I wanted. Any way, blessings as you build your library.

PS. Establish a relationship with a Sales Person (like Rusty Davidson - Rusty.Davidson@faithlife.com). They are often able to give you better deals than the website. If you do buy from him, mention my name - it probably won't get you a better price, but it will probably make Rusty smile as I consider him a friend.
