How to updates work now?

Under 6.x, if I get an update, I usually either "Update Now" or see the blue circle saying an update is available, and then I restart. Do I have to restart, or will it update on its own given enough time? I am not sure how this works now, if there is a new option like with resources.

It depends, but you should know by clicking on the blue circle. Software updates always require a restart. Most resources don't, but sometimes do.
