Reflecting on my trial month

So I've tried logos cloud for the month.

I like the new media browser - I posted questions when I bought logos 6 in the first place asking why it was impossible to browse the content I had just bought. Then as now I think it was an unfair sale because it is so hard to find/browse media that I might as well not have it. If it is necessary to have a subscription to get this feature then I count the media as a loss and a slightly dishonest sale in the first place. Not that I want a refund because the rest of the content I got with Logos 6 was worth it.

Looks to me like it will one day be useful but not now I'm afraid...

Extra Library ContentI enjoyed researching some topics that are not well represented in my library usually eg. I studied the writings of Erasmus. I also had a chance to look more closely at some sets I fancied like the Lexham Bible Guides and worked out that they are not for me - which save me some cash. I think content rental makes good sense at least for some people but I still bought books this month so it comes down to what's included.

Will I subscribe?In a word... no. I fully support Logos offering subscription content. I'm very disappointed by subscription only content. It changes how I feel about the software. I think if someone has a small library or no library then subscription might be for them. Mixed mode ownership + subscription is not for me. Certainly not with these extra features - they are simply not compelling enough. Also not at this price to content ratio - other subscription services are offering a lot more books for less monthly expense.

Just my thoughts...

Thanks for the trial and the dialogue...but for now I continue down the path of my pre-orders and being a happy Logos user etc.

Faithlife have made it clear that their main focus for Logos Cloud at the moment is those who don't already have a large library - so that is consistent with what you are saying here.

These two are available as part of a Logos Now subscription - which is more designed to enhance functionality for those with existing base packages.

I find it difficult to have a clear opinion about Logos Cloud or Logos Now because (1) I have so much in the desktop version already that I hardly had any use for them. Difficult to gauge what the experience would be for someone who does not already have a large library; (2) I did not have much need NOW for the content specific to, say, Logos Now. I'd like to be able to pull out the concordance when I need it, but it's like asking how much I'd be ready to pay monthly to have the Timeline tool available. I have it and use it from time to time. If all the sudden I did not have it, I'd probably be frustrated when I need it. If I had never had it, I might ask for it in suggestions but find that I can live just fine without it.

Down the road though, a project may come up for which the concordance (or something else) would make it possible to find data that it would be difficult to get otherwise. This is where I am hoping that Logos 7 will indeed include many of these tools and that there will not be any bad surprise there (like: waiting for the concordance eagerly only to find out that it remains an exclusive feature of Logos Now).

Thanks Graham - I am aware of Logos Now and the distinction is helpful to point out. I lumped them together a bit because I think they aren't entirely distinctive in so much as cloud is really the same as Now but with the extra resources and higher price.

At the moment it seems to me that I can buy real books which are already available or subscribe to a service which barely exists yet... I know where my money is going.

Thanks for your comments - it seems a bit complex for me. I'm in favour of the rental model but I am not in favour of rental only features. My two requests to faithlife are:

1) Dynamic pricing on logos cloud for those of us who don't want to pay for resources we already own but do like the prospect of keeping up to date for less money.

2) Make all rental features available to also purchase. This would simply amount to selling the minimal crossgrade a year in advance just like the journal libraries. The features are yours when they come but they are yours to keep.

If they made those tweaks I'd feel valued as a customer. Presently I feel overlooked.
