What's the best way to find substantive discussion of "the world"? It's a very common phrase in John, esp. John 17. A basic search finds tons of stuff, but I'd like to limit it to articles, dictionary headings, etc.
Suggestions?
I think it would be better if you could narrow your topic more. I've been thinking about this and did the following search to try to narrow the results.

Ben, my first thought is to search on Headwords and Large Text. (If you don't know, do that by checking the search fields in the dropdown, as seen in the screenshot.)
[Edit: After looking at Bruce's strategy, I think he's right too...after searching All Resources, if you get too many hits (I did), narrow it to more specific collections in which you want to find results.)
Search on world in Topic guide. The topic will include articles in your bible dictionaries.
Here are some options that may help your research

In addition to what has already been described, I'd want to look at Exegetical Dictionaries for κόσμος. You can find them fairly easily from a Bible Word Study.
I might also be inclined to see if there were technical commentaries on John that had an excursus on the topic. I did find THE MEANING OF Ο ΚΟΣΜΟΣ IN THE FOURTH GOSPEL in the ICC volume.
I'd want to look at Exegetical Dictionaries for κόσμος.
Searched for kosmos within John 17 milestone
κόσμος WITHIN {Milestone <jn17>}
