I have been thinking about writing this for some time, as I pop between Verbum on Mac and Windows pretty regularly, and the Mac version is SLOW. The slowness is periodic; the "pie plate" will spin, and then things will happen.
I am running on a maxed out Macbook Pro 2014, just about a year old, with ample specs:
2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.8GHz
• 16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
• 1TB PCIe-based Flash Storage
To me it seems like it's when parts of the app are run for the first time or first time in awhile (even though I keep Verbum running pretty much all the time on my laptop). Some examples just this morning as I was timing things:
1. Clicked an existing note that I have a shortcut on the bar at the top - pie spins for 13 seconds then opens
2. In the new Multiple resources, I type "NASB" to filter bibles in the dropdown - pie spins for 15 seconds
3. In the Note from #1, I click to add a note - pie spins for 4 seconds.
4. Bring up Passage Guide, Text Comparison, Factbook, and use them - all instantaneous
5. Click on ESV shortcut on toolbar - pie spins for 15 seconds (brought up with 3 extra resources). I turned off the first Bible in multiple resources, pie spins 1 second. I turn off the second, pie spins for 34 seconds! Turning off the 3rd Bible takes 14 seconds but no pie plate spinning. I tried turning another multiple resource Bible off by clicking its checklist off, and it was > 30 seconds of pie plate spinning I did not time it.
I think Multiple Resources may need some performance work, but it's not just that part at all, as the other tests show and as I have seen for quite some time with older versions of Verbum. To me it seems like parts of Verbum are getting swapped out of memory or something, and have to be re-established to execute, since it almost always happens when you go up to the Mac and use Verbum after it has been sitting for awhile (even though no other active work is being done with it). If you sitting in Verbum using it, it gets faster meaning the pie plate does not show up.
I use this Mac laptop when I travel as it's much lighter (I have a 2 year old Windows laptop), but the pie plate spinning is very noticeable.
Does anyone else notice this? It's the only OS X app I see this happening with - I run about 8-10 other apps pretty regularly. There is zero hourglass waiting on the Windows side. I can't say the Mac version is something I would want to work with full time.
I am not sure how to proceed, but given my install of Verbum with plenty of resources, notes, collections, tags, etc., I figure someone else must see this?
