McGee's Thru the Bible Commentary Version(s)

Hi,
I am looking at the details of the September Zondervan/Nelson Bundle Deals ... May I know what is the differences between the 5 Volume (1 Resources) McGee's Thru the Bible Commentary ($199.99) which I already own. https://www.logos.com/product/1222/thru-the-bible-commentary
vs
Thru the Bible Commentary Series (60 vols.) ($379.95) https://www.logos.com/product/39478/thru-the-bible-commentary-series
Wondering should I consider the 60 volumes version as part of the Complete Thomas Nelson Bundle. Thanks.

The Thru the Bible Commentary Series (60 vols.) is nearly 7,000 pages more than the McGee's Thru the Bible Commentary (5 vols.). If you are interested in the former I would encourage you to do a quick Google search for "J. Vernon McGee Essential Bible Study Library" I think you will like that price better.

I was curious about this too. I have the 5-volume. In the beginning of this set, it explains that the volumes were originally published in several smaller volumes, so I concluded that I already have the 60 volumes, just in a more compact format.
If I'm actually missing information by not having the 60 volumes, I'd like to know, but I don't think anything is missing.

Looking at the page count on the product page for both resources boast a near 7,000 page difference. If this is accurate then I would say you are certainly missing something.

John,
Thanks for pointing me to the additional 7,000 pages [:)] Considering the Price ... I am tempted to spend that amount of money on some volume or collections from www.best.commentaries.com

I don't own both these resources so take what I offer with a grain of salt. BUT, I believe the 60 vol set is in a trade paperback size (8x5 inches) and the 5 vol set (which I received in a leather bound set) is textbook size (11x8 inches) so the page difference may not be as significant as one might think.

This is what I've suspected. Now, if they're really the same content, I think dynamic pricing should apply on the Nelson package, even if one only has the 5-volume set.

David,
Sounds like what you said makes a lot of sense ... I just got a reply from another source (to be confirmed) ... QUOTE: "I know first-hand that these are the same. The reason why the first one is less pages is because in print the pages are much larger than they are in the second one."

I have both the single and the set in my Logos library and they seem to be exactly the same.
For further information about the single volume and the set being the same, please see these previous threads on the forums.

They are the largely same. You might find some differences as the following suggests.
You'll have to decide if the differences are worth the extra money (word for word transcription versus edited for better reading).
Here is Dr. McGee's explanation at the beginning of the 5 volume edition (emphasis mine):
PREFACE
The radio broadcasts of the Thru the Bible Radio five-year program were transcribed, edited, and published first in single-volume paperbacks to accommodate the radio audience. From the beginning there was a demand that they be published in a more permanent form and in fewer volumes. This new hardback edition is an attempt to meet that need.
There has been a minimal amount of further editing for this publication. Therefore, these messages are not the word-for-word recording of the taped messages which went out over the air. The changes were necessary to accommodate a reading audience rather than a listening audience.

Mark,
Thanks, I will be happy with the word for word transcription :-) save some money ... considering the strength of the USD over the last few weeks :-(

Me four. And I am happy to have it, even if it is the same content as the single volume. One change is the minor formatting difference. [:)]

Hmm. I was thinking it was a bonus gift. Somehow I recall a contest a few months ago where an unspecified resource would be given. Wonder if it's from that. Ok, I'm done, and I'm thankful regardless of the reason. I'm currently reading through the volume on Luke. Comparing with the single volume of the series, the only difference I see is in the formatting of the heading text (extra spaces, centering, 1st letter bolding in some cases, etc.). I like the volumes being separate, however, I'm puzzled by the big difference in cost for the electronic editions.

Since the single resource and multiple resource versions of this product are the same content, we decided to retire the single resource, older version (in our format), and maintain the multi-resource edition. (Why this one? It allows users to buy only the books of the Bible they want, rather than the entire set without options.)
To preserve dynamic pricing for content you own, we've unlocked the multi-resource edition for everyone that owned the single resource edition. Our apologies for any confusion, but we wanted to take care of everyone that owned the earlier one, but not the newer, multi-resource edition.
We should've sent an email to those that owned the older edition. I'll check to see if that somehow didn't make it out, and ensure that it does.

Thanks for the clarification, Gabe;
I for one appreciate the gift. Yes, it is a gift, as you/Faithlife was not required to do this. No apologies needed for confusion, as there was really no confusion (I'll speak for myself), just curiosity. [:)]

I had the older one.
When I saw the download of the 60 vols. today, I was surprised and had to quickly check my account in case I had accidentally clicked some wrong button.
Thanks for both your explanation and for being generous enough to give the newer one free to those with the older edition.

Since many of us might choose to hide these new volumes to prevent further clutter of our library, that option might be mentioned in whatever email goes out: "If you don't want to see these volumes you can hide them by using CTRL/CMD-right click and choosing "Hide this resource" in Library. You will still retain your license for these volumes if you do so."

The cynic in me would say that this is the real reason Faithlife removed the single volume edition from sale. Perhaps Nelson wants it this way, too.
I doubt a single complete set will ever sell at that price. Ridiculous.

Was going to say the same but you beat me to the punch Jack, for my mind if I was to hide anything it will be the single volume of this very reason.

As someone who has it, but isn't that interested, part of me wants to hide the 60 vol. But if they are being maintained and the one volume is NOT and in effect an obsolete resource, then it would make sense to hide the 1 volume. Any thoughts?

Are you sure they are the same content? One is about 1000 pages, the other is about 11000 pages, or something insane like that... Is it just a matter of the way the pages have been formatted between the two?

In addition to what Mark has stated, here is a small screenshot of the two side by side. The only difference I can see is minor formatting.

Steve, take a look at this post.
The first resource is no longer being sold. It was a single volume edition of the commentary that was itself a compilation of the five volume set that was produced after the 60 volumes had been released.

Thanks for the clarification. It appears the post has changed focus. I always have appreciated McGee's "Though the Bible" radio broadcast's. I listened to many broadcasts on my daily drives to-and-from work at the Air Force Base in which I was serving. He was instrumental in helping me back to the Catholic (Universal) faith in Christ Jesus. After many years it was McGee who reinforced what I had been taught all along in CCD. That, and Chuck Swindoll .. what a great preacher!
Blessings!

Yep, I too got that deal. It was from the late, lamented, and much missed Rejoice Software. They used to send e-mails about once a week. I got some nice deals from them.
It could still be available in that Nelson eBible form somewhere, although I don't remember if I had to load it into L3 first to get the license recognized.

Gabi and Mark,
Just a thought ... Should we hide the Single Volume vs Hiding the 60 Volumes?
See the discussion here https://community.logos.com/forums/t/113170.aspx Thru the Bible Commentary is listed as having been (or to be) annotated for the Bible Book Guide Dataset.
Considering that the 5 Volume (Single Resource) version will not be sold any more, I would think that Logos would only "update" / "tag" / "refer to" the 60 Volume (60 Resources) version.
PS: I would prefer to follow Mark's recommendation to hide the 60 Volume Version to reduce cluttering :-)

Take a look at the new Bible Guide Book Dataset Documentation. Logos has removed the Single Resource Version and instead use the 60 Volume Version.
Sounds like we might not want to hide the 60 Volume Version.
