Oh no not another Bible translation IEB!

Does anyone know anything about this translation? Is it likely to make it in to Logos?

I do like having a range of bibles, but there are so many out there. Do we really need them all?

For me a translation has to justify its existence.

If I could only have 10 English translation I would choose these:

ESV, NIV2011, NASB, NRSV,REB, NEB, KJV, NKJV, NJB, Good News Translation.

Can this translation justify its existence in Logos?

Read a few verses from their sample of John (1:1-6). I am unimpressed. Did not find it to be particularly accurate, and found its readability less clear than several currently available versions. Oops—That is the version Jan mentioned.

As to the version linked by P A, I was even less impressed. Read the same verses in their sample. Seems like a rather poor paraphrase.

I don't know much about the translation of THIS International English (TM) Bible, but they must have been very much ahead of their time since the web page's copyright goes back to 1978:

Perhaps Al Gore consulted them when he invented the Internet.

Every translation is an interpretation. When the translation is done by a single person (e.g. The Message), problems become exponentially greater. Committees tend to be safer since there is a lot of back and forth between how passages ought to be translated. So...IEB immediately loses credibility simply because of its single translator/interpreter. Not to mention the translation feels 'dumbed' down and unnecessary.

I also have the same thought about translations/paraphrases done by a single person and almost said something about it, but I actually like The Message. But now that you've brought it up, I've examined myself as to why I like The Message and I'm completely convinced the IEB is unnecessary. I think it boils down to this: I appreciate The Message for its prose or poetry, not because it adds any particular clarity to the passage. The IEB, like most other translations, actually don't add clarity as much as they add perspective, and this added perspective actually filters out other possible meanings that the biblical text in the original language may suggest.

I suppose it all goes back to what other posters have stated: It's a good idea to gain as much skill as possible in original languages. Other than expediency or public communications, I don't rely too much on translations.
