Buying New Hardware and Logos

Hi,

It is time to make the plunge and buy Logos software. My question is, since I want the best possible experience now and in the future, which hardware is going to be more effective. Should I go with the windows machines because they are the norm or is the apple product a better machine to use for logos?

I really would like to make an informed decision, and I am counting on the experience of my brothers and my sisters here to help me. Thank you all ahead of time.

Both platforms have advantages and disadvantages with Logos. I am a Mac only user. It used to be hands down "windows," but that has changed greatly over the past couple of years.

My suggestion? You should purchase the computer for your needs overall... Logos will be just fine. Just remember the suggestion in the linked thread above: You MUST have an SSD... and I would add: make sure it is large enough. My suggestion is 250 MB at a minimum.

I'm sure you will get a lot of different opinions here. I'm a long-term PC user and I have always been pleased with my Logos desktop experience. At the same time I use an Apple phone and love the Logos app on my 6+ and ipad mini. As long as you get a decent quality machine I think you will be happy with either. Personally I would also recommend considering a SSD and a decent amount of RAM as this will tremendously help with indexing.

I think you mean GB not MB [:)] and I do agree that 250 is a minimum. I use a 500 GB.

I too. Logos will not use all that but I feel better with a large SSD.

I assume nowadays all high end computers have multicore processors which makes life easier when Logos is indexing.

I have been a Logos user from 2010, I had always been a Windows and Dos person.

I always looked at the Mac as a overprice computer before, and for those who had money to burn.

I now finally join and got my first Mac about three months ago. I can say that I am very happy that got one, and Logos has never been better.

I went with the 15" Retina MacBook Pro with 16GB ram, 256GB pcie SSD, and quad core i7. It is more than i needed but i like to be able to grow into a computer and this should late for many years.

But for you make sure that whatever you get has a 256GB SSD. you will be happy that you did.

I have been a windows user for forever it seems, and having recently made the switch to iphone and ipad, I am becoming more familiar with the Apple side of life, and all of its wonders. I know from my libronix experience that Logos is super resource intensive and that I need a machine that will handle all of the requirements now and down the road.

Personally, I would love to be able to dedicate the new machine to just Logos and Bibleworks exclusively. That is the goal anyhow. Price point isn't really an issue for me because a comparably equipped windows machine will be as much as the apple. My biggest concern is what will give me the best return on my dollar and performance.

Given the issues with the new windows 10 I am really leaning towards a Macbook.....

What issues with Windows 10? I have it running on 2 machines with no issues. I'd keep an eye out for the Surface Pro 4 announcement in October.

There are more than a few windows 10 specific threads... but that is to be expected with any new OS. I am sure El Capitan will get it's own attention next month.

I have been a Logos user since 2008. Came in on a PC with Logos 3. Moved to a MacBook Pro in 2012 with Logos 4 and there was a fairly dramatic difference for the worse with the Mac. However, when Logos 5 came out in the Fall of 2012 near parity between the platforms was achieved in my opinion - especially after a few updates that fixed lingering issues. Now with Logos 6 I don't believe there is much if any difference between the two. I would buy a computer based on your own needs and I believe you will be well satisfied running Logos on either platform.

I use both Macs and Windows machines. I feel a bit more comfortable with the Mac, but I really can't fault Windows anymore. An SSD or a hybrid drive works best. More RAM helps, but anything more than 8GB isn't usually necessary save for indexing.

I really like Win 10, especially on a laptop. Just a current observation.
