Im really enjoying the logos software program. I have the Gold package upgraded with additional resources which got me to thinking What books do you go to most often in your sermon prep or just regular study? What would be your top 5 you can't live without? Bible back grounds , Commentaries, Dictionaries,Encyclopedias etc .... Just the top 5 .Thanks for the responses it will help me look for more resources I may not have other wise thought about .Blessings

Lol yeah I hear ya. I actually own some really good volumes in the NICOT/NICNT set and to be honest about it for me the NAC/ and WBC/ PNTC are pretty boss ! In my opinion they can really hold their own. But of course if its expensive then you know its good and have to have it (forgive me Lord) ..... That being said Ill most likely end up with that whole set yet for the time being Im pretty satisfied with my collection although I live with a haunting feeling there is always something Im missing somewhere hence this post . I love reading thru all of your resources I do believe this could help us with new ideas we may have yet to pursue. Blessing

(The OP asked for 5 most used, I'll explain why what I list is not more than that, almost all the sets I have are partial.) Further below I'll give 7 examples from Verbum (one of which covers just a part of one Biblical book + three misc commentaries (Pelican/Penguin; Abingdon -series; NCC/CGT) and one which is the category Bible Dictionaries in which I don't think each one You use should count as a separate resource when used digitally, and I count systematic/dogmatic theology and Church Fathers as one), with the 1-4 most used within the series (these are not complete series, the one for which I mention the four most used is ICC - about half of the ones I have being from the original series), and some examples from other softwares. My base NT-set is Paideia which I have both under the Faitlife platforms (what I have has been incomplete and stopped upgrading it here) as well as Accordance (full set) and another of my favourite sets is Old Testament Library which almost makes the list below (the set in Logos Now/Verbum) and New Testament Library (select volumes only, I don't have the set myself, it's coming to Accordance). As I specialize in GJn (especially 2-5) I use several resources for it such as An Introduction to the Gospel of John by Raymond E. Brown and Eerdmans Critical Commentary by Urban C. von Wahlde as well as some print commentaries such as Pelican by John Marsh, so that my use spreads out over several books and I will use more a long while from now. I also specialize in the deuteronomistic history work, especially Jer 1-46 and haven't bought anything excellent on chapters 37-46 yet, so I also use Abingdon Old Testament Commentary - Deuteronomy by Brueggemann which was in Vyrso some time ago but no longer available. Another set I use is the New Interpreter's Bible Commentary (in Accordance):

AYBC Judges 1-12 by Sasson, Jer 1-36 by Jack R. Lundbom (2 vols., I don't have the third volume as it hasn't been on a sale yet since I got interested), Habakkuk by Andersen - those in Logos Now currently usually with my old quad core laptop with SSD and too little RAM (should max it to 8 GB) - without Accordance installed; Mark by Joel Marcus, 1-3 Jn by Raymond E. Brown and 2 Peter Jude by Neyrey in Accordance, I have the NT set including the old Mt -volume by Albright, except the new Apocalypse -volume.
ICC 2 Cor 1-7 by Thrall; the old volumes: GJn by Bernard, Job by Driver and Gray, 1 Jn by Brooke. Should mention that the only print ICC volume I have is Isaiah 40-55 volume II by Goldingay and Payne, i.e. it covers Is 44:24-55:13, I bought it a while before it even was available in Verbum.
Francis Hall's 10 vol. Dogmatic Theology, some time within the past few Weeks the regular price has been lowered from $199.99 to $129.99. I bought it used. Origen of Alexandria in the Fathers of the Church -series (I have the Fathers of the Ante-Nicene Era (23 vols.) -set).
Hermeneia OT Amos in Accordance (I have the entire OT and am upgrading); NT Lk by Bovon and Acts by Pervo (not my favourite Biblical books, but a good commentaries on it) , 1 Jn by Strecker and Didache by Niederwimmer in Verbum.
New Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible (I have it in print as well) which I use more and ISBE 1915 in Verbum.
WBC 2 Cor 2nd Edition - especially the excurcuses by Ralph P. Martin in Logos Now and 1-3 Jn Revised Edition by Smalley in Accordance.
Bruce Waltke OT Theology in OliveTree.
The misc/partial commentaries: Job 1–21: Interpretation and Commentary by Choon-Leong Seow which I got cheap since I used a $50 coupon code which was valid for anything from the store as a thanks to upgrading to Logos 6 (Anglican Silver) and purchasing other items at the same time and was getting 25% off on most individual items. Paul’s Letters from Prison by J.L. Houlden (it's the Pelican/Penguin -series, one of the volumes is in pre-pub, no other volumes are under the Faithlife platform (yet?)). Abingdon New Testament Commentary - 1 & 2 Thessalonians by Furnish - I bought it in Vyrso where it was available for a short while.
If the series would come out in Accordance, I might buy some New Cambridge Commentary (NCC) -volumes, I have Mt by Neyrey as printed matter, that volume has an approach that complements exegetically technical commentaries. Another favourite series is the old Cambridge Greek Testament (CGT), I have only a few volumes (passed on Lk) bought for sale prices or in the 2014 Cyber Monday Mega Pack and The Epistles to the Colossians and to Philemon by C. F. D. Moule as printed matter (that volume not available under the Faithlife platform probably because it's copyrighted since it's much newer than the rest of the series).

I have all Logos features, in Verbum what's mostly lacking for me is Verbum Now.
The Bibles I use the most are: 1971 RSV NT, 2010 NABRE OT (in all softwares and of course large print printed matter), REB (in all softwares and in print), Torah: A Modern Commentary for a translation on Gn (in Accordance), and if Accordance comes out with the Samaritan Pentateuch translation by Benyamim Tsedaka I will certainly use it a lot for Ex-Dt. As I use Ecclesiasticus (Sirach) I'll mention that I use NRSV for it.

Reading through the responses, I'm a bit surprised that the answers are mainly commentaries. I'm assuming most responders are pastors/preachers (maybe incorrectly), so I would have guessed that the vast majority would list language tools as their most used, most valuable Logos tools. For me, it is nice to have commentaries on Logos, but it is far less time-consuming to look up a passage in a physical Commentary, than to look up several Greek or Hebrew words in several Encyclopedias or lexicons in one passage. I'm wondering if I was wrong about it being mainly preachers answering these questions, if preachers are doing less original language work than they used to, or if I'm missing something else (quite probable).

For me, if I had to, I'd give up all of my electronic Commentaries (Logos and others) in order to keep my original language Logos stuff. It saves me massive time in sermon prep. I would have a really hard time listing only five here, but the tools I would miss the most, and the ones I use far more than any others are these:

Bibles: NASB, ESV, NA27 (Greek New Testament), Biblia Hebreica (Hebrew Old Testament)

Language tools: Hebrew - BDB, Holladay. Greek: Bauer (BDAG), Louw and Nida, Liddell and Scott, Colin Brown

These are my most used, "must have" books, that save me the most time over physical books.

Don't get me wrong about Commentaries. It is definitely faster to be able to just click a few times to pull up commentaries in Logos than using a physical book. I just use my Language tools that much more.

For actual, real Bible study, I always start first with The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge because it has the fullest available cross references available. It is very handy to have this resource available in Logos software. This resource lets the Bible explain itself, something the Bible does far better than most might suppose who have not fully explored this method of Bible study.

I use Vine's Expository Dictionary as needed;

I use Cremer's Lexicon and also the Loew and Nida Lexicon;

For the study of Bible prophecy writ large, I use George N. H. Peters, Theocratic Kingdom, in 3 volumes, now handily available in Logos;

For the study of apologetics, I use Giesler's Encyclopedia of Apologetics and (not in Logos, but once published by Baker) Irwin H. Linton's volume, A Lawyer Examines the Bible, and the numerous older apologetic works he cites--which together would make a tremendously useful series or collection for Logos 6 software--a rival approach to Giesler which I find more useful and convincing after many years of intensive study of the subject.

Dictionaries is a good question. I don't think I have a most used one. I usually open up a topic in all dictionaries at the same time, skim what's there, and then pick one or two and go into depth. Maybe not the most effective way of researching...

For me, commentaries is a category that's easy to grasp for listing the most used ones. Also, as previous posters started listing series (whether they have them as partial or almost full sets I don't know) I was thinking that: sure - I use some series frequently. I wanted to give most of the examples from series which I have as partial sets because if I would buy more full sets I suppose I should use them as well just because of having spent $$, so giving examples from partial sets that I have proves that I've both cherry-picked and use some of the volumes a lot and I could have given a few more examples of individual volumes but thought that'd just more like reflect which volumes I actually have.
An explanation regarding language tools is that I prefer Accordance for that and have my most expensive lexicons there: HALOT, BDAG, NIDNTTE and I also have Concise Dictionary of Classical Hebrew there, and I'm yet to learn to type the languages effectively with the keyboard. (I currently take three Hebrew classes, last year I took Greek, a while back a bit of Latin.) In Verbum I have L4 Original Languages Library, and I've bought Analytical Key to the Old Testament (4 vols.) keyed to BDB used when I entered the Academic Pricing program (I dislike the program as it's problematic to clearly enough ask for not getting the limitations when contacting sales for a particular order), and use these to look up languages if I don't want to switch apps, when researching or reading through. As the Original Languages Library (now Biblical Languages) is not sold to non-academic customers since version 5, I'm unsure what to recommend in Verbum for others, for languages.

Now that I got a chance to think more, I do use these as well: Josephus (2nd ed) by Tessa Rajak, The Babylonian Talmud: Original Text, Edited, Corrected, Formulated and Translated into English (19 vols.) by Michael L. Rodkinson bought used, Modern Theological German: A Reader and Dictionary by Ziefle, Encyclopedia Britannica - will use and would use the 1911 Edition as well, The Dead Sea Scrolls Study Edition: Vol. I: 1Q1–4Q273–Vol. II: 4Q274–11Q31 by Martínez and Tigchelaar, A Cultural Handbook to the Bible by John J.Pilch, and finally Sheffield / T&T Clark Bible Guides Collection (44 vols.) - it was a terrific purchase for $109.99 on the sale (I have complemented with the 1 Pt volume by David G. Horrell as printed matter as it's not (yet?) in Verbum) which is a base set for the OT and NT for me (of monographs but they feel more like introductions with a bit of commentary). (EDIT: Other OT base sets being: OTL (in Logos Now and Verbum) and Hermeneia (in Accordance only).)
EDIT: important to also see: https://community.logos.com/forums/p/114363/757581.aspx#757581 from Aug. 19. about 3 in the afternoon Bellingham time, further regarding commentaries, Moffatt mentioned there is a set I will really use especially as I'm lacking a bit old commentaries on many Biblical books so it will be an old NT commentaries base set.

Getting more and more difficult to sticking to not to give more than five examples (the categories get more broad and the misc category has too many examples - I would have liked to keep that one down to 3)! So maybe Josephus and the Talmud should be put in the same category as Systematic/Dogmatic Theology and Church Fathers, renaming that category to Authorities/Sources, the EB in the misc. category and all the language and ancient text tools is more like a functionality of the software and in many cases dependent on what's in the base-package You've got and whether You've complemented with recent big lexicons:

Interesting. I get what you are saying - I'm guessing none of us have the time we would like to spend working with the text, week in and week out. Your thought is that perhaps many who don't have the time to do as extensive exegetical work as they would like make sure to interact with the more intensive language commentaries. I can certainly understand that.

For me, I'm old enough that I remember doing all my exegetical (as well as commentary) work with physical books. Bible Software made that process MUCH faster. I would guess that I spend half the time I used to on working through the text, because I spend very little time flipping through pages, with word after word. I'm also much more likely to look into a word that MIGHT be useful, because it only takes a few seconds. As I said earlier, it is nice to pull up a commentary to a passage with just a few clicks. However, accessing physical commentaries was never as big a part of my study time as word studies.

Since the major format changes from Libronix to versions 4, 5, and 6, I've wondered if Accordance would be a better fit for me, at least in exegetical work. It seems to me that the newer versions are much more geared toward searching things like commentaries and other resources, and not as much toward accessing specific lexicons/dictionaries/encyclopedias for specific words (can't overstate how much I miss keylinking). I've heard that Accordance (as well as Bibleworks) is better designed for original language work.

I also much prefer the way the way Libroinx gave us access to control priorities However .Keylinking still exists but not as easily accessible as it was in Libroinx days.

For reasons unknown to me or you the designers think its easier for users if i's all jumbled up in the one area of the library - to me this has to be one of the most poorly thought out and implemented features of the software - but you can still set priority's for different data types by right clicking on a resource in your priority list and choosing the advanced options.

Hopefully one day they will give us back a better way to be access and manage these settings.

It is very in depth, well written and is basically the standard by which others are judged. When it was first released Evangelicals were a bit suspicious of it. But now it is widely viewed as the best all around dictionary out there. ISBE rev. is considered the top evangelical one and is very good. I use both together but if i could only have one AYBD would be it.

Thank you Dan! As I sit here finishing up for tomorrows message Im so very thankful for Logos. Im a bi vocational Pastor church planter and uneducated servant of the Lord. After 5 years of books all over the place and the time it took going through everything now my messages are getting done so much more efficiently than ever before which is huge for a man who Loves his Lord and His Family . I'm so very thankful for the time it has allowed me to spend time with the Lord (not freaking about what to preach on Sunday ) And just being a husband and Dad . I heard Casting Crowns on the radio this morning (big shock as they get played all the time lol) But for the first time I actually Listened and in that song there is a part where He says "It must have been Lonely by my side" That got me to thinking about my wife and kids who have been by my side these last 4 yrs of our church plant and how because of the demands of ministry they have given up so much as well , and then those words in that song hit me like a brick "It must have been so lonely by my side " Think about that by someones side yet as if they are not there. Im thankful for this program and I pray it blesses you as it has me . Thank you for your responses as they will help me in my ministry. Blessings
