Systematic Theology - Views by Tradition by Topic

I find great value having the Systematic Theologies option with the Passage Guide. Would it be possible to have this (Systematic Theologies) with the Topic Guide? Tonight I'm trying to research what all the traditions have to say about the Lord's Supper and Baptism. I can think of all kinds of topics I would like to query... with results separated by tradition.

Perhaps this can be considered? I would use this all the time. If there is an approach I've overlooked, let me know! Thanks.

While it's not a part of a report, one of the nice features of Wayne Grudem's Systematic theology is that he provides a pointer to where other Sys Theo's will deal with the same subject matter. It's not quite as clean as links in the passage guide, but here's an excerpt from His chapter on the Lord's Supper for you to see.

TCB... Thanks for the Grudem tip. Will try to use in the meantime.

Logos... with all the theology resources available consider leveraging the power of your system by connecting these resources by tradition to topics (in addition to verses). Many times I want to see what various traditions say about a theological subject and it is tedious to do so.

I have the kindle version of Grudem's systematic so I've never bothered to buy it in Logos and thanks to it being by Zondervan (I assume) it wasn't included in the Systematic Theologies collection or any of the many base packages I've bought. All that too say...is that section linked to those places in the listed books or are they just page numbers? If they are live links, I may consider buying it, even though I own it in Kindle and have thorough made use of it already.

You have highlighted a shortcoming with the ST tool that hopefully will be addressed at some point. It should be feasible with all the groundwork they've laid so far.

In the meantime, what often works as a stopgap is to open up the Passage Guide for a verse that is a commonly used prooftext on a particular topic. For example, on the divinity of the Holy Spirit, look up Acts 5:3-4--nearly everyone uses that one. I did that one recently and got good results. For baptism, I'd use texts such as Matt. 28:19 and Rom. 6:3-4. Of course, that will show you all the hits regardless of locus, and it will neglect resources that don't actually cite the reference due to brevity, format, or paraphrase. It's not a perfect solution by any stretch, but it's certainly better than what we had before (i.e., zilch).

Agreed, because even when a verse is disputed as a proof-text, it is often discussed in the rebuttal of opposing views. And then you can painstakingly sort your commentaries yourself by the same collections which underlay the systematic theologies dataset, using both Heading: and Largetext: searches in your systematic theology books for the topic you are researching.

Yes, I can use the Passage Guide for verses here and there, but given Systematic Theologies are often grouped by topic, quoting many different verses, it seems so logical to have this unleashed in the Topic Guide... by tradition... as well.

PS... And thanks for noting in another thread the addition of new ST resources in a collection!

As a Lutheran - I find this list to be a bit odd. Nothing against Pieper and Mueller, but to have them as the only listed ones? 1) Mueller was not at all an independent work. To my understanding, he wrote his work to condense Pieper's 3 German volumes into one English one, with the primary audience of LCMS Schoolteachers. 2) Both are LCMS figures. Admittedly, I am also LCMS and can see how Pieper's presentation is worth consulting, and how our doctrinal standards are understood, I find it odd that the references to the actual doctrinal standards are not included. Frankly, the little looking at Hodge that I have made shows him more aware of Lutheran teaching than this.

I would want a list of references for the Lutheran position to include some Luther and the Chemnitz monograph (which admittedly was only translated into English a bit over a generation ago). And something this recent should also include some 20th century figures like Sasse, Jeremias, and Robert Jenson.

Just another plea for linking Systematic Theologies to the Logos Factbook, Various Guides, etc. It is frustrating to do a search and see Dictionaries, Journals, Sermons, etc. show up as default resources, but no Systematic Theologies!

Hey just another plea to see Systematic Theologies more tightly integrated or more easily accessible within the Logos system. Made this request in October of last year. It is interesting (but also disappointing) how I can look up theological topics in the Topic Guide/Factbook and see results gathered by dictionaries or journals, but not systematic theologies?!? So if researching something like "infant baptism" or complementarianism," topics perfect for theology resources, I continue to make manual searches, because I'm more interested in what theologians or traditions have to say than a dictionary or a journal. Was kinda hoping L7 would have this outage... no longer an outage Beef up the integration of systematic/biblical theology resources... not just in the Passage Guide!
