I am planning to buy Surface but not sure which one would be better to compromise speed and money. What do you think? I am planning to use more unattached from keyboard. Should i buy Sbook i7 or Pro 4 i7?

Hopefully you will get some good responses, but just to make sure: Logos only runs on the "pro" version of the surface device.

Logos will run on the Surface Pro or the Surface Book. The Surface Book is Microsoft's new "laptop" offering aimed at competing with the Macbook Pro. It runs full Windows 10.

The Surface Pro 4 would be easier to hold for sure because it has the kickstand, which really works well propped up in one's lap kicking back in an easy chair. [:)] Seriously, I'd go with the Surface Pro if your main use case is to use it apart from the keyboard.

I'd wait to hear what the reviews are like or to see one in person. If you want an i7 it will probably generate more heat than the i5, but that's just a guess based on prior offerings. It could be that the thermals are better in the newest generation of Intel processors.

I would check with logos first. I have a laptop with a touch screen running windows 10 pro. Logos will not highlight with you finger or a pen, using the touch screen. When I asked logos costumer service about this issue they said logos desktop would not support the touch screen.
Below is the email I received:

    Hello Stephen,

Thank you for contacting Faithlife Support. Our desktop version of Logos does not support full touch screen use. I would recommend using a mouse to highlight properly when using your desktop version of Logos.

I would argue that the best compromise for speed and money is the Surface Pro 3.  The Surface Pro 4 may have a little longer battery life than the Surface Pro 3 (which lasts about 5 hours of constant use).  But it will not have more power.  And I find 5 hours plenty of battery life.  Someone else may take issue with that.

I use the Surface Pro 3  i7 with 8 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD.  I cannot imagine anything running Logos better, and the Surface Pro 3 is on sale.  Logos 6 starts and is ready to go in 10 to 15 seconds first time, every time, on my Surface pro.

By the way, Logos 6 Highlights great with the Surface Pro 3 pen.  Personal Books on the Surface Pro tablet. [:D]

I use this thing constantly, and heat is not a problem.  I have noticed a little warmth occasionally, but nothing that would at all annoy.  Far less heat than any i7 laptop that I ever saw.  The tablet mode is great.

Of course the Surface Pro 4 is the latest and greatest.  I am sure it is great.

I would definitely go Surface Pro.  If you compromise on power, you are sure to regret it (in my opinion).  I was going to get the Surface Pro 4, but decided the Surface Pro 3 will more than have adequate power at less cost.

And this is important:  The Surface Pro 3 is a unanimous hit.  It is done right, and has rave reviews.  They got it right.  Microsoft will probably have another winner in Surface Pro 4.  But that is not guaranteed.  I went with the sure thing for less money.  I have not been disappointed.  No regrets.

Stick with the Pro.  It was the best decision I ever made, and the only computer I use.

As Michael pointed out, you can use the pen to highlight in Logos. It works superbly on the Surface Pro 3 and I anticipate the same on the Surface Pro 4. While Logos was not made to be touch-centric, the pen provides this usability very precisely.

The Surface Book in tablet mode detached has only 3 hours of battery life. There are more batteries in the base.

For your use case, the Pro is better suited. I am having the same conundrum.

If detached Sbook has only 3 hours then Pro 4 is much better choice. Does anyone knows how much slower detached Sbook would be from attached. Would be it slower then Pro 4 or still faster?

As an owner of Surface Pro first edition for over 2 years (and a Logos user for over 10 years) and having watched the Microsoft event yesterday, If I were upgrading I would do the Surface Book. It has the power I desire when docked to the keyboard (which also would work with the Surface dock for external monitor and mouse) and would be extremely light with the display undocked. The 3 hours of battery life would be adequate for preaching with just the tablet in hand, and I could dock the tablet in slate mode for longer study sessions.

Also with the new universal apps in Win10 and the power of the new Lumia phones, I hope FL takes a fresh look at their decision to discontinue the Windows Store App. I would love FL to make a Win10 app on par with Android and iOS.

The 3 hours of battery life in the Surface Book highlights that it is designed as a laptop first and tablet second, and that tablet use is intended for shorter periods of time.

The plus for the Surface Book as a tablet is its larger screen size. You can also get a dedicated GPU with some versions, although I think I read that the dedicated GPU is in the keyboard, not the tablet. The negative is that it doesn't have the multi-angle kickstand, which to me is a very big deal. Having used the first generation SP that Dave Thomas has and the SP3, the usability of the SP3 is far better than the original SP.

The Surface Book is 3.48 lbs., but Microsoft doesn't say how much the tablet alone weighs. Does anyone know the answer to that?

I believe it is around 1.6 lbs. As in lighter than the SP4 which makes sense since there are fewer batteries in the tablet portion than the SP4.

Played with an SP4 in store. A core i5 with 4 gb ram was blazing fast, so I am guessing i5 with 8 GB is going to be the sweet spot.

The new type cover is good too.

Pre-ordered an i5 SP4 with 8 gigs of RAM and 256 GB SSD.

Was tempted to go for the i7 since in the Skylake generation of processors, there is a meaningful upgrade of the integrated GPU from the i5 to i7.

Last year I tried the SP3 i7 before returning it for the SP3 i5. The i7 speed difference was negligible from the i5 and the thermals were higher. I'm sure you'll be pleased with your decision for the SP4 i5. The configuration you chose is the sweet spot.

Thanks Bill. I intend to install Logos on it and write a basic review of using Logos on it. If anyone had questions, let me know. I should get it on the 26th, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
