Orton - Christian Theology

LOGOS:
Can we get lower bids on this:
https://www.logos.com/product/53702/h-orton-wileys-systematic-theology-collection
This was the standard Wesleyan Systematic Theology in seminary 40 years ago - though mostly a descriptive theology, it is evangelical and routed in the Wesleyan/Holiness tradition.
The graph suggests that lower bids might be able to support this project - lower bids will also mean more bids.

Floyd

I recently noticed the same thing. Since this has to be changed manually I'm sure the appropriate Faithlife person has not seen this yet. Thanks for bringing this up.

Lower bid increments were added, although the "funding" indicator has dropped to almost exactly 100% at $18, so they increased the production cost by 20% when they lowered the bids.

That seems a bit unfair, but at least they did not raise the cost so much that it made the winning bid price climb. This has been one of my "Wesleyan/Holiness" wants since I first joined LOGOS ten or so years ago. Glad to see it getting ready for production.

Here is a list I created over 10 years ago and slightly revised three years or so ago. Most of these are available from LOGOS now:
Bible Commentaries
1. Wesleyan Bible Study Commentaries (2001 to Present) **Currently being developed by the Wesleyan Publishing House (a division of The Wesleyan Church), the following volumes have been published:
Genesis (out of stock indefinitely) Psalms
Proverbs John
Acts Romans
Ephesians I and II Thessalonians
1 & 2 Timothy, Titus, and Philemon James
Revelation (January 2005)
2. Wesleyan Bible Commentary (1966) **This six volume set, published by the Willam B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, covers the entire Bible. I have found it to be a helpful resource to have at my side.
Theological Works
1. Miley, John (1892). Systematic Theology **I am less familiar with Miley’s work, but Grudem says, “This is probably the most scholarly and extensive Arminian systematic theology ever written. Miley was a professor at Drew Theological Seminary, Madison, New Jersey.” It is available on line at the Internet Archive:
http://www.archive.org/search.php?query=Miley%20systematic%20theology%20AND%20collection%3Aamericana
2. Pope, William Burt (1880). A Compendium Of Christian Theology **Pope’s three volume work is both scholarly and easy to read. It is grounded throughout in scripture. This work is available on-line as PDF files at
Volume 1: http://wesley.nnu.edu/wesleyctr/books/2401-2500/HDM2404.PDF
Volume 2: http://wesley.nnu.edu/wesleyctr/books/2401-2500/HDM2405.PDF
Volume 3: http://wesley.nnu.edu/wesleyctr/books/2401-2500/HDM2406.PDF
Wayne Grudem (author of Systematic Theology) writes that, “This work … is one of the greatest systematic theologies written from a Wesleyan or Arminian perspective.”Watson’s work, published in two volumes, is a well-written work which, though very biblical, has a philosophical bent. It available on-line at
http://wesley.nnu.edu/wesleyan_theology/watson/index.htm
The on-line format is such that it cannot be searched and its formatting leaves much to be desired for reading. This work is also available as a PDF file on an AGES CD.
4. Wiley, H. Orton (1940). Christian Theology.Orton’s is an important work because it was the standard Wesleyan theology text for Bible College and Seminary students for much of the latter half of the 20th century. It, however, does not have the depth of either Watson or Pope (or, Grudem states, Miley). It is much more a descriptive theology than a systematic theology. It is available on line at
http://wesley.nnu.edu/holiness_tradition/wiley/index.htm
Study Bibles
1. Reflecting God Study Bible (1998)This is the Wesleyan edition of the familiar NIV Study Bible. Besides including a good set of study notes, this edition also includes a set for essays aimed at helping the believer live a holy life. Though still available through Christian book distributors, it does not seem to be available from the Zondervan, the publisher.
2. The Wesley Bible (1990)Study notes from a Wesleyan perspective are the keynote of this NKJV bible. This is still my standard Study Bible.
3. The Wesley Study Bible (2009)
A recent Wesleyan study Bible edited by Joel B. Green (from Fuller Seminary) and William H. Willimon (a United Methodist Bishop)

Though this original list was created in 2004, I did add this last item to the list of original resources as I typed this note. You will note that I marked several of the items in RED ** to indicate that they are at some stage in the Pre-pub process. I would like to see the remaining items in Libronix, I can only hope.

I do see 15 and lower in my view at this time so please bid away.

Floyd, thanks for pointing this out; I had not seen it.
It should be noted that unlike most CP offerings, this is not a work that would be in the public domain because of age; it was published in the 1940's. IIRC, Wiley released it into PD before his death. It is available online if you want to Google and take a look. I have used the online edition and found it unwieldy, hence this would be a great addition to Logos well worth this price, especially if they do a good job with the links.

Bump - this was posted yesterday evening.
I thought I would repost it a bit earlier in the day. With a week to go, the price is going down - let's get it down to $15 or $12 by next week.

Out of curiosity, for those within the Wesleyan/Holiness stream, what is the current systematic theology of choice from the Wesleyan/Holiness perspective?

I would imagine there are various options, but "Grace, Faith, and Holiness" by Dunning (not yet in Logos) http://www.amazon.com/Grace-Faith-Holiness-Wesleyan-Systematic/dp/0834112191 and Oden's trilogy https://www.logos.com/product/3683/systematic-theology would probably be among the top contenders.

Thanks, Paul. I was familiar with Oden's work, but not Dunning's. Appreciate the heads up - and maybe we can encourage it to be brought over to LOGOS in the near future. I'll post a link to this thread in the suggestion forum.

Thanks, Paul. I've seen Dunning on the shelves of many of my Wesleyan friends. I've also enjoyed Oden's work. I appreciate the info.

His was my first systematic theology, and I was disappointed to find out that not all theology books were so great :-) I love how he saturates them with references of the Church Fathers and many other eras throughout history.

Bumping this because it deserves the exposure. This work is a good addition to Logos and is quite a good value at $15. $12 would be even better and looks doable.

I prefer Frank Moore's Coffee Shop Theology, 2 volumes.
