Logos Search FAILS

I realize I'm not the first to bring this up, but when I want to find a verse in the Bible, the most effective place for me to do my search is Google...NOT Logos. Google gives me a positive return approximately 100% of the time. With Logos, I'm happy if I get 50%...actually, I'm NOT happy I get 50%--that's the point of this post.

I know that when I know what the verse says but not the reference I cannot find the verse using the search function. I usually have to rely on Google myself.

Entering what the verse says and running a search should give the results you are looking for

I'm trying to understand whether it is that you are remembering a different version, words are missing, in the wrong order or something else

One (maybe extreme) way to stop that being a problem is to run the search as a grid search against all your English Bibles. That way those which match will return results

I am not sure if this is what David meant but .... Both my wife & I have problems remembering 'that verse' and are convinced that we cam remember a phrase from it that should retrieve it from Logos. Almost inevitably the phrase is remembered not quite correctly. A Logos precise search will not pick it up where the fuzzy search by Google will.

I guess that Logos, with a significantly smaller programming research budget, will always be beaten by Google when it comes to programming capabilities on a specific utility (e.g. fuzzy searches) so I do not demand that Logos to compete with Google!

Thanks - its a good example. And I understand that introducing a fuzzy search capability could be helpful (and a lot of people have called for it)

One way I get round that - and I can't remember the last time I went to Google to search for a verse is to not be too precise. This does mean I sometimes get a few too many results but it normally does get the result I want.

So, for example, I know that there is a verse which speaks about something to do with money being the root of evil but I don't remember exactly how it goes. Entering the three terms in a search window gives me the result (the three terms together without any operator causes Logos to search for verses containing all three words

I'm not suggesting it is perfect but I do find that, with a few simple techniques, it gives the results I am looking for in most cases. Hence my interest in trying to understand where it is not perceived to work.

Please provide example(s) when Google finds verse and Logos does NOT. Note: bumping thread from Oct 2015.

Hypothesis: search words/phrase are in different chapter/verse, especially since chapter and verse numbering lack correspondence with original language discourses: e.g. placement of verse # 6 in Philippians 4 so an important contextual phrase is left dangling in verse 5.

Hence my interest in trying to understand where it is not perceived to work.

In contrast, Logos 6.11 Bible Search of All Bibles finds one result in Philippians 4:4-7 (verses are combined in Wuest's NT):

Potential "fuzzy" search idea is a personal book Bible with more verses combined (similar to Wuest NT).

The best way to do a bible search is to use a single DISTINCTIVE word of a SHORT PHRASE otherwise you may have a problem with the fact that you may not remember the passage exactly or may conflate different translations. Also, I recommend searching all bibles. You can always choose to pick your favorite translation or simply go to the hit in your favorite if it doesn't appear in your search.
