Encyclopedia Britannica Update

Hi All,
I just wanted to give a quick update on the progress of the Encyclopedia Britannica project.
We've identified the additional content we're going to produce for the Encyclopedia Britannica. Our hope was to get the product page up today. However, we wanted to take the necessary time to double-check all of our statistics so that we can give accurate details on the product page. We hope to have the page up the first part of next week.
Thank you for your patience!

Always Friday. And literally you could still be right early the next week hence sometime not the current week but the week following. But please don't stretch it out to early in the week next year.

I appreciate your thinking, Dan. I will now put a sign on my desk that says, "Back in 15 minutes," and take off for the day. [:)]

Sadest thing is I have seen a "Back in 15 minutes" signs up and waited over two hours for it, now not right outside and I kept coming back, her response was it took longer than she thought. But time and again the sign has meant to me closed an indeterminate time and after 20 minutes I assume it is a sign meaning back whenever. I also remember a video store whose hand made back in five minutes was put up whether he was out to get a coffee or away for a Dr.'s appointment. I much more respect the adjustable sign that says back at "clock-face". I realize things happen but it is annoying when a sign means nothing beyond "not here please try later". I apologize for the rant and maybe it is a small town thing but it was frustrating when it was a registry office (this is a private office issuing all types of licences and functioning as the US equivalent of the DMV, our province is historically big on privatization of public services). The other one that was bad for it was the Sears depot (not sure if catalog ordering that comes to a local often exclusive store still happens in the states or not, currently the Vulcan Sears catalog depot is just a counter in the back of a computer store which also does UPS drop offs).

Dan,
Thanks for the glimpse of small town life in Canada. I think Sears catalog ordering still works down here. Astoria, Oregon, had a Sears outlet of sorts the last time I noticed. (I'm in a Portland suburb.) Your recent election got some play down here. "Okay, Steve, time to let the Fora get back on topic, already!"

To be fair these events all happened more than 15 years ago (the video store for be was from my high school days more than 20 years back). The weirdest thing that has happened recently in Vulcan to me is going into said computer store to try to grab an iPhone cable and being told by the guy in there you can't buy one, he is gone, I am only here to do Sears. I just shook my head and went off to the hardware to find one. It's not all bad in my county seat though, but weirdness does happen yesterday visiting my mother in the nursing home, I was whisked off to enter a side door because a resident was having an issue kicking at the main door in her wheel chair, bless her and them, although maybe she was just objecting to the community choir doing their weekly sing along. I really appreciate their care and good humor in dealing with some of the more difficult residents (including my mother who collects massive amounts of the cloth bibs to send home with me (I than her and then always drop them at the nurses station, had I been taking these home I would have enough to build a large wall out of these bibs, I am well aware this is not home but the three large living room areas and staff that really cares makes all the difference). I saw last week a story about a home up in Calgary where a man was being mentally and physically tortured and one of the care attendants said she should not be charged she knew others who treated residents far worse, all she was doing was flicking water on him and threatening to pour his urine over his head. Having been in that large new home visiting a friend in there it doesn't surprise me a bit, I heard with my own ears a man asking fairly clearly to have his soiled diaper changed only to hear someone saying as they leave to her coworker I have no idea what he wants. I did stop at the floor nurses station and tell them that the gentleman in room 110 was needing to be changed and she did thank me and said that two different care aids had been sent there in the last half hour, I told her I clearly heard him ask to be changed and overheard them saying I can't understand what he wants. I remember thinking to myself this home maybe new with huge private rooms but I cannot believe the staff could be so bad. Admittedly I have visited friends on several of the floors and the care level varied greatly depending on the floor you were on indeed my wheel chair bound friend in his early fifties was on the first floor where all the younger residents needing nursing home care were and he received abuse from residents and staff alike, after being moved up to the floor with the over 80s were generally housed he has found a better fit. And mydeparted friend who was up on the lock down ward received wonderful care and appeared in the best health of his life the last few years he was there it was a shame that Dr. Clarke needed to be there but I know his last years were mostly happy there. I realize I am rambling on here but I just thank God for the care level that my mother receives.

Dan,
I'm sorry that your single-payer system hasn't overcome human cruelties. From my not so humble POV, down here we've got the human cruelties compounded by what is in effect a massive boondoggle for our insurance industry. I'm truly thankful your mother and some others are blessed with caring care givers. May their tribe increase!

In my friends home in Calgary one of the worse situations was a woman who didn't seem to understand the concept of Christian compassion, she was fired because she refused to help the gay residents (only a handful). I am not saying she had to compromise her beliefs in that homosexuality is a sin, but to not offer compassion and care for a child of God, lost or not seems to go against the gospel call. Nursing homes fall under one of the grey areas... In our province most are private for profit businesses run by multinational organizations. Vulcan's for example is an Extendicare (a name that often times in Canada as well as in the states is equated with a lower level of care, thankfully many are better and the US operation which i had heard was a disaster is over with). Most of us will have the privilege of growing older and when we no longer are able to assist them in our/their homes I am thankful for caring facilitates. May the tribe of compassionate caring individuals increase for sure.

Status update please (on webpage for the EBNE)
Tomorrow will be a month since its original release...
Hi all,
Thanks for checking in.
I can assure you we're working hard on getting this out as soon as possible. Part of the holdup is that we're trying to verify all the contents so that we can give accurate statistics. There are tens of thousands of articles and it's taking longer to get everything verified than we had initially thought.
I must apologize once again for the delay. I really appreciate everyone's patience.

Hi All,
The new Encyclopedia Britannica collection PDP is now up. https://www.logos.com/product/55228/encyclopaedia-britannica-collection
If you already own the original resource, you don't have to do anything. The Pre-order button should be grayed out. Once the new product is complete it will unlock to your account.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for your patience.

The pre-order button is not greyed out for me. I'm seeing a dynamic price of $100.

It's the same on all browsers.
It looks like we've not yet been given a licence for the EB itself, only Compton's.

I am seeing the exact same...$100 when logged in and $199.99 when logged out. I have checked with Safari and Chrome.
It looks like it is applying the Dynamic Price algorithm as opposed to providing the entire bundle as $0.
Update - My page now also sees the greyed out pre-order button with a $199.99 price.

I'm on a Mac, Chrome and Safari show that I have to pay. Which is not correct.

Mine also is showing $100 instead of being greyed out.
Also, can you give the number of articles and media for the new Britannica resource. I don't have the stats that were previously listed for Comptons around anywhere to figure out the difference. I would be interested in breaking the two out instead of having the two numbers combined.

Hi Danny,
The separate media and article counts are in the lower down on the page in the line items for each resource.
EBNE:
80,000+ articles
15,000+ media
Compton's:
19,000+ articles
5,000+ media.

On Noet it shows I own the product as well. EDIT: Yes it is correct on the LOGOS page as well now.
That was quick response and great interaction.

It looks like the article count is similar to the Micropedia version of Britannica. Is that a fair assessment or is it something totally hybrid to the existing Britannica. I know this strikes up an old set of questions, but wondering what the final result is.

Ben, once again it would be really helpful to show some page views for the EB. Is that going to happen?

Great question. There is probably a number of answers and clarifications that people will need to make on this so I'll just start with a shortish answer (please please please feel free to follow up).
The Compton's resource is the full Compton's database from Britannica, it should be exactly the same.
The EBNE component of the collection is made up of a large subset of the actual articles from the full Encyclopedia Britannica database. So it has the full articles but not all of them (we're offering over 80,000 of them, which is a huge percentage. I can try to get you an exact number but I think there are only a few thousand articles that we don't have).

Thanks very much for the hard work to get the new EB Collection in the pipeline, and thank you for the updates in this thread.
I had a couple unexpected expenses arise, and wound up having to cancel the first version of the EBNE to help get the budget lined up. I am happy to report that I just got off the phone with Zack W. at Faithlife, and he was able to place a new preorder for me on the EB Collection at my original EBNE pre-pub price of $99. Very cool! I can't wait for the new collection to go live. Thanks again to Ben and the rest of the Faithlife folks for working so hard to get us this even-better version of Encyclopedia Britannica. God bless y'all!

This is a radical shift from the first offering and clearly shows a very good faith approach from Faithlife. It really goes beyond fair in what has been done at the same price as the original offering. Thanks very much. This type of response clearly sets Faithlife apart.
I am curious if there is a distinguishing trait of the articles left out, very long articles, specific types of articles, copywrite issues with some of the articles, etc. Without asking you to be dogmatic, it would help to have a sense of what caused some of the articles to be eliminated. That would also set some type of expectation as well. Don't mean to open up a can of worms here. lol
The fact that the included articles are 'in full' rather than condensed and the sheer number of articles, should eliminate many of the previous concerns.
