Computer Speed?

I realize this question is a bit subjective but I am hoping some tech savvy LOGOS users can provide some feedback as I have tried to research this on my own but have not been able to arrive at a definitive conclusion.

I am wondering if I upgrade my computer to the recommended specifications LOGOS has posted, whether I will notice an improvement on the speed. As many of us have, I have made a substantial investment in LOGOS resources and want to improve my ability to access those resources (if possible). Also, any suggestions beyond the specs listed by LOGOS are welcome!

One of the most important things you can do to improve your speed is to get an SSD rather than a traditional hard drive.

The computer I have currently has the following specifications:

That's an old processor, so a new computer with Intel i5 or i7 with integrated graphics would be an improvement (make sure it has at least 2 cores and 4 threads). Get at least 8 GB memory and a 7200 RPM drive (but an SSD is much faster with at least 240 GB). And get a 64 bit operating system e.g Windows 10.

NB. I'm hesitant to recommend an upgrade to your existing system without knowing more. What OS? Is it 64-bit? Does it have a SATA 2 controller (an SSD is wasted on SATA 1, and don't bother if it only has Parallel ATA, PATA, for hard drives).

+1 [Y] plus suggest shopping for SATA III SSD with over 500 MB/sec write speed.

Hello and Welcome Robert.

From your specifications i think you are talking about a desktop system. However one of the best things about Logos is having it with you. So along those lines maybe you should look at a notebook computer.

Also you did not say the size of your library only "that it was a substantial investment". My Logos library is 4,522 resources, 30gb data but i may not say that it is substantial for many people, but it is for me.

But the point is that with more resources having a faster CPU, more Ram, better Graphics, and a SSD which i think should be 256GB ~ 512GB if you have the money. Depending on the amount money you have put into Logos it may justify a better computer to use and access it with.

As for me I had a Asus notebook which a i3 processor, 8GB ram, and a 500GB HDD that i upgraded to 256GB SSD. I used that with Logos for three years. and this back in Jun i upgraded to my first Apple it is a Mac BookPro 15" retina, i7with 4 cores, 16GB Ram, PCI-e 256GB SSD.

I am very happy with how Logos runs on this MacBook Pro.

Edited: The PCIe SSD Write is close to 1,200MB/s and Read 1,821MB/s

Some recent anecdotal evidence to share. Just bought my wife a new Windows 10 notebook. It has a 6th generation i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, and a 1TB hybrid HDD spinning at 5400 rpm. Now I knew that a slower disc would slow down indexing, and it did. I watched system properties as indexing was going on, and noted that CPU usage on all four processing threads averaged about 20-25%. 5-6 GB of RAM were being used. But, the disc drive was almost always 100% utilized. So the process was hampered by disc I/O (as expected). There was processing power available to go faster, and enough RAM to support it, but HDD speed limited the process significantly.

So if you can afford a reasonsbly sized SSD it will pay-off at least for indexing.
