Critical/Scholarly Commentaries

My browser tab is crashing every time I load the "Critical/Scholarly Commentary Recommendation" thread I posted, so I wanted to re-post here and simply say thank you to those who chimed in. You gave me a great list to look over and consider. I will look over them, choose one, and be in touch with my Logos sales rep. :-)

Hi Nathan,

It would have been useful if you had indicated which series you already own. We don't all know what is included in the packages you mention and you can't expect readers to go check.

WBC is a strong value no doubt about it but it has gone up in price considerably.

After that, it depends also on the kind of institution you attend. If they put more emphasis on certain lines of interpretation (for instance Evangelical with a Reformed backbone) professors might approve and appreciate the use of series that are of that stripe such as BECNT or Pillar. If you have professors who want a broader, more critical, scholarship, then you would have to look at series such as Anchor and Hermeneia. These two series are uneven however, and the first very costly. If you cannot afford buying them all, you might take a best-of approach. You can also purchase the best volumes on the books the take classes on as you go and/or watch for sales. There are other critical series that have select volumes such as Eerdmans Critical Commentary or Baker Old Testament Commentaries. Some of these volumes are the best of their kind or must have on the book they comment on (e.g., Goldingay's 3 volumes on Psalms).

My Firefox browser crashed several times last night too whenever I tried to load that thread and it did it again this morning. Does anyone know why this might be the case? Is it because someone posted a large sample? Actually, I could not tell because I have not yet been able to open the thread without it crashing.

In Firefox I get a Reftagger scripting error on that thread. If I stop the execution of the script I can read the thread.

My firefox crashed as well. I thought it was just going to take a while... but after a halfhour, I went and checked and firefox was giving me the pizzawheel and asking to restart. So I did.

I was able to access it and got a script error notification along the way. It seemed to me that part of the post on the WBC had started replicating itself. It's gone now. The thread seems to load without an issue.

Oops that must have been my post of WBC - first time I ever did that, I guess it will be my last. I have seen others post samples, I wonder what was wrong with it! Oh well sorry Mark and apologies to everyone for the inconvenience, it won't happen again!

Thanks for the info! I also chatted with my professors, and they do recommend WBC as well as a good overall starting point. Any others would be beneficial as well, but they seem to agree that if I need to narrow it down to one that WBC would be the most solid investment I can get.

Unfortunately WBC was at a lower price a month ago. I agree that it is the most extensive and to me, acceptable, of the options out there. I am glad you Checked with your professors.

Don, it was a very unusual circumstance, so don't give up over that. It might have been a server issue on FL's part. Maybe they will look into what went wrong with what seemed to me to be a routine post.
