Lower System Specs for Mac

I was wondering if one of the Mac users could help me understand why the Mac specs are so much less then the PC specs and if you think those specs will increase as Mac L4 moves from Alpha to Beta to Retail?

I am not trying to stir anything up (no Mac vs. PC flame wars please), I am just searching for an honest answer to this question. I've never owned a Mac but was struck by how different the specs looked for each system.

If I were to venture a semi intelligent guess since I am familiar with both systems and currently prefer Macs, It is the Operating System that makes most of the difference and the overhead that is required for them to perform efficiently. Windows is and always has been a resource hog. They're whole registry concept is a mess. If you were to compare systems with identical hardware specs, Mac OSx would run circles around WinX. Mac apps are designed for speed and efficiency.

They're not. The minimum requirements for running on Windows are lower than the minimum requirements for running on a Mac, though this is largely because Apple didn't ship any Pentium 4-based Macs.

Looking at the above listing, the only thing that stands out is the difference between the "recommend" requirements, and the only place those differ are in RAM requirement and disk space. In both cases, the difference is really inconsequential. The disk-space requirements for the two products are effectively the same, since the primary consumer of disk space in both cases is the size of your resources and the associated index that will be generated. 8GB vs 12GB vs 20 GB pretty much all depends on the size of your library. As for the RAM differential, I don't really know what to tell you. I know that we heartily recommend 2GB+ in the FAQ that's pinned to the top of this forum and 3GB would be even better.

From the perspective of a developer, there is no expectation that I'm aware of that the final Mac product will require fewer resources for equivalent performance compared to the Windows version. When we release the final version, I'm sure these requirements will be updated accordingly.
