The Parousia: A Critical Inquiry into the New Testament Doctrine of Our Lord’s Second Coming

https://www.logos.com/product/49333/the-parousia-a-critical-inquiry-into-the-new-testament-doctrine-of-our-lords-second-coming

This could go over the top by next Friday if we get a few more bids or those that have bid less then 8 dollars to raise their bid.   Come on boys and girls, it would be nice to get this into production before "Christ comes again" (sarcasm).  Wink

You don't seem to understand how it works. You would need nearly all of those who bid $8 to bid $10. Asking people to "raise their bid" in this case is a losing strategy. Instead, you should seek more $8 bidders (or even $7 ones).

Currently I am not convinced that this is worth $10. Perhaps you could to explain why you think it is.

Maybe there is something to get you thinking.  From the overview:

Late nineteenth-century theologian James Stuart Russell’s study of the second coming, first published anonymously in 1878, has become a classic in eschatology. Russell—who viewed AD 70 as the time of the second coming, and the beginning of the millennium—examines “whether there may not be a fundamental difference between the relation of the church of the apostolic age to the predicted Parousia and the relation to that event sustained by subsequent ages.”

Russell posits that “there must therefore be some grave misconception on the part of those who maintain that the Christian church of today occupies precisely the same relation and should maintain the same attitude towards the ‘coming of the Lord’ as the church in the days of St. Paul.” This volume is an attempt to “clear up this misconception and to ascertain the true meaning of the Word of God on a subject which holds so conspicuous a place in the teaching of our Lord and his apostles.” His work presents a thorough and tightly-reasoned case for Preterism.

[[Preterism holds that the contents of Revelation constitute a prophecy of events that were fulfilled in the 1st century. Preterists believe the dating of the book of Revelation is of vital importance and that it was written before the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD.]]

I am not a Preterist by any means,  Actually, I believe the historic (non-dispensational) premillennial view, just like the apostles taught. [;)]  However, I want my people to understand that there are various understandings of eschatological events and prophecy.  I want them to realize that godly scholarly people disagree about this.  While all Christians believe in Jesus' return and triumph, there is not one view that is the Biblical view.  And everyone is certainly wrong about some aspect of their eschatology.  Some of us more than others perhaps, but I believe in hind sight, after Jesus returns, we will all be a bit surprised

And the Preterist view is one view that my library is somewhat lacking.  That is reason enough for me to bid.  After all, we should not close our minds so tight that we can't get a little ventilation in there.

Currently I am not convinced that this is worth $10. Perhaps you could to explain why you think it is.

In my opinion, this resource is worth much more than $8 or $10.

Although preterism has been around for quite some time (some would argue since the beginning of Christianity), it is gaining even more traction in recent years. I know a few people who are preterists and, to be quite honest, they can explain and defend their eschatological views much better than most others. How do they do this? They read this book as a starting point. It is very detailed and examines a lot of scriptures. When a person first explained this view to me, he gave me a copy of this book to read. I was very impressed with its thoroughness,

I read a lot on the forums how people defend their beliefs by reading books that go against their's. Well, if you want to be able to see how and why a preterist believes, this is the single and most important "must have" book on the subject. Yes, it is older but no other book, that I have read, covers it in such detail. In actuality, most recent books on the subject reference this book. A good example of this is R.C. Sproul's "The Last Day's According to Jesus". Although Sproul is defending the "partial preterist" view in his book, he heavily references Russell's work throughout.

So in summary, this book is a very detailed examination of the preterist's beliefs. Most "full" and "partial" preterists say that this book best lays the foundation of their beliefs. If you want to learn more about preterism or simply want to have the most complete reference book covering the subject, this is a must have. Even if you don't read the book from cover to cover, the cross linking from future Logos resources that cite this work and the ability to quickly look up scripture references in the book with Logos will be awesome.

This looks like a good deal for $8.  I placed my bid.

I had a conversation with a pastor yesterday who told me his organization will not consider ministerial applications from people who have preterits views.  This book caught my eye for that reason.

Thank you, this is very encouraging. I placed my bid on the very first day that it was available (last January). It had an initial bump when first offered but then stagnated. I thought that it would linger for much longer. Recently, it bumped up some more and now, with the start of this thread (thanks Tom!), it is soooooo close!

WooHoo! Hopefully, Faithlife will get it produced quickly.

EDIT: I was just at the product page and looked at the reviews. I found the below review by Albert Pigeon to be helpful:

Here is what some others have said about Russell’s Parousia…

Charles Spurgeon “…it has so much of truth in it, and throws so much new light upon obscure portions of the Scriptures, and is accompanied with so much critical research and close reasoning, that it can be injurious to none and may be profitable to all.”

    R. C. Sproul (Chairman, Ligonier Ministries) “I believe that Russell's work is one of the most important treatments on Biblical eschatology that is available to the church today. The issues raised in this volume with respect to the time-frame references of the New Testament to the Parousia are vitally important not only for eschatology but for the future debate over the credibility of Sacred Scripture.”

Gary DeMar (author of Last Days Madness) “How many times have you struggled with the interpretation of certain Biblical texts related to the time of Jesus' return because they did not fit with a preconceived system of eschatology? Russell's Parousia takes the Bible seriously when it tells us of the nearness of Christ's return. Those who claim to interpret the Bible literally, trip over the obvious meaning of these time texts by making Scripture mean the opposite of what it unequivocally declares. Reading Russell is a breath of fresh air in a room filled with smoke and mirror hermeneutics.”

Kenneth Gentry (author of Before Jerusalem Fell) “I highly recommend this well-organized, carefully argued, and compellingly written defense of Preterism to serious and mature students of the Bible. It is one of the most persuasive and challenging books I have read on the subject of eschatology and has had a great impact on my own thinking. Russell's biblico-theological study of New Testament eschatology sets a standard of excellence.”

    F. W. Farrar said the book was "full of suggestiveness."

Milton Terry, author of Biblical Hermeneutics and Biblical Apocalyptics, quoted extensively from Russell's book and fully endorsed Russell's preterist approach.

I'm in! Thank you all for taking the time to sell it.

A lot of times I post that same statement not because I am not familiar with the resource, but because with a bit of a sales pitch you'll get a lot more bids.

This one however I was not aware of its seminal nature in the preterist position, nor was I aware that spurgeon considered it to be profitable for all. Those two things together were enough to sell me on something I might have passed on all together.

For any of you who likes books like this there is a great place to go for hundreds of free PDF books on history, eschatology and commentaries. Many are older authors. One could spend much time on this site.
