Is logos on windows 10 effectively desktop logos?

Yes, with the exception of touch screen functions.

There are tons of options in this realm. I own 2. A Lenovo x220t. ...A convertible laptop/tablet hybrid. It handles Logos as well as my desktop in laptop mode. But it is very thick and clunky as a tablet and you run into the touch screen wall. Logos just has not put forth the resources to make the software touch friendly. (there are work-arounds.) For a pocket rocket, I use a Dell Venue 8 pro. (64 GB version) Very reasonably priced. It runs the desktop version well. The text to speech function is better on Windows 10. I personally am not a fan of the computer voices. it sounds as though you've cleared that hurdle. The audio for the ESV Bible is excellent.

I will let Paul and others comment more, but you need to be aware that the DESKTOP version downloads all resources and creates a large index file. The mobile app has a MUCH smaller footprint and is designed to run many features "in the cloud." My point: make sure you purchase an appropriatly sized storage on the device. For example: a 64 GB device has 64 GB MINUS the operating system (increasing with patches) MINUS Logos (with all its resources, documents, db files) MINUS a reasonable buffer space (20 percent minimum). If the only use is Logos, 64 <might> be ok. I dont think my 250GB drive is large enough On my laptop. Is this device to meet those needs, or does it serve a different purpose? In my opinion, the mobile app is superior to the desktop app for reading and highlighting. It is far inferior for "study." I know that Paul likes his tablets, as does my friend Michael (who raves about surface pros), but I don't think I would be happy with one (if it replaced my iPad Or MacBook).

For clarification: "voiceover" is the apple name for a "read aloud" service. By definition, there won't be any non-apple devices with "voiceover," even if the device has a similar feature.

If you are thinking of Android, I would repost in the Android forum. You might need to explain what voiceover is (an "accessibility" read aloud service from apple), since the mobile apps don't technically support the feature (at least that is my understanding).

Not at all. The Venue 8 pro can be had for $150 - $200.

The 11 pro with more ram and i5 processor for $400 or so on ebay.

local disk c > users >your name > app data > local > logos. Right click on the logos folder then properties. You will see the total size. I get by with 64 GB. But I use it almost exclusively for Logos. If you can live with the larger footprint, an 11 inch tablet might serve you better since they offer more ram, bigger hard drives, faster processors ... and of course a higher sticker price. Yesterday I saw a new 64 GB Venue 8 pro on ebay for $150.

I have a modest library (1658 resources, Total logos folder size: 21.7 GB ) I have Microsoft Office installed. It came with it. I manly keep it so I have one note, but Windows 10 comes with a stripped down version of one note, So i have the option to remove Office for a bit more disk space. I said all that to make the point that I still have 19.2 GB free space. If one clones a working version of Logos to the tablet, It is not necessary to do a total index. However I tried a full index and it did just fine. Your mileage may vary.

Not quite as small as a iPad, but you might look at a Windows Hybrid - like the Lenova Twist. Mine came with Windows 8 a couple of years ago and has been upgraded to Windows 10. Still going strong and I am happy with it.

Yes, They work great. As stated above, I have a similar Lenovo. I still get raised eyebrows when I take it to Bible study. Whereas the Venue looks like a lot of the larger smart phones. It seems to disappear in the flock of other devices folks carry.

After playing some more in the shop I found the windows tablet to be really glitchy just with touch and also showing hiding the keyboard. I don't know if it is typical but it makes me think I'm better sticking with an iPad...

I do find some iPad features very annoying though. Syncing of songs and videos has been very unreliable despite a very fast internet connection but it isn't a logos related issue.

I highlight a LOT, and the mobile versions of Logos don't work for me--they can't handle the Notes file sizes that I have. The highlighting just doesn't load right and isn't reliable.

I know you wanted a cheap solution, but an MS Surface Pro 4 (m3) or MS Surface Book would run the full Logos experience with no compromises. I suggest the m3 only because it doesn't have a fan, and therefore will run quiet during a service--like you are used to with your iPad. It will just take a while on initial index.

I highlight quite a bit too, but thankfully don't suffer from "large note syndrome." That is certainly something to consider. If a user doesn't suffer from that problem, the mobile app is superior (imo) for reading & highlighting.

I think we have talked about this before, but are your note documents thematic? Pallete based? Resource specific?

It's too bad that Faithlife hasn't made the full PC version of Logos suitable for the tablet environment. Having the full PC version on a small Windows tablet is not ideal, but highlighting with a stylus is still better than on the iOS or Android mobile apps. I do agree with Alabama24 that reading is better on the mobile apps.

I wondered if I had a bad experience at the shop I visited. Perhaps it was just a faulty tablet? I tried going to another shop and none of the windows display tablets were working there either... doesn't instill confidence. I think I'm going to delay until Jan.

I use Lenovo Yoga 2 10" tablet with Windows 10, SSD 32 GB and 128 GB SD card.

It works flawlessly with all the applications including the MS Office 2016. The only problem is the size of the SSD disk, mainly for Logos. It is not produced with the 64 GB or 128 GB disk and that is a problem. I installed Logos on C drive and use junction function to put Data folder on the SD drive. Also I have to put OneDrive on the virtual disk created on SD card.

Eventually I think am going to replace this tablet with (hopefully) Surface Pro 4 with at least 256 GB to be able to have Logos on the main disk.

Alabama: Many of my highlights were done before the new "by-resource" convention, which I have now started using (vs "by palette). I wish that Logos made a tool where I could migrate my old palette highlights out into Resource or Theme Notes files. With rare exception, I haven't created themed Highlights files...although doing so would make it possible to share them via Faithlife. While I love highlighting, my use of this feature has become an impediment to using Logos--at all on mobile devices and for quick reference on PCs (it takes a minute or two for my highlights to "snap in"), which can be quite a delay when you are needing to zip around fast.

I second that motion. I have tons of highlights I made when I had no highlighting strategy and now wish they could be easily moved into various new documents easily and in bulk. Sure wish Logos would reinvent notes and highlighting. This is a very, very weak area for such wonderful software.

I continue to use my "hot-brick", The Original Surface Pro, with a small noisy desk fan blowing on it all the time, and wish I could get a smaller, less heavy, not overly expensive replacement. I use an Android Tablet (Galaxy S and not the inferior lower resolution S2 either!) for reading but miss the full better functionality Windows 10 provides.

What a shame the Surface Pro options (I have a huge library folks) are not lower priced and available for all. I do not think anything less than an I5 would work for a Windows machine but I keep getting intrigued by the Dell Venue 8 pro. (64 GB version) notes I keep reading for a scaled down Windows only mobile approach - but it seems labor intensive to get it right - and I like automatically indexing that doesn't take hours or days too.

Guess I am stuck with my Surface Pro. I cannot afford to upgrade and I will not switch to IOS (the dreaded Apple) at any price.

I continue to use and "love" my Venue 8 pro. So much so that when I ran across a spectacular deal on a Venue 11 pro, I added it to the stable as well. It has a 128GB drive, 4GB ram, and a scaled down i5 processor. While it may be slightly faster, I still find myself preferring the 8 pro for small groups.

If the larger footprint is something you can live with, They are reasonably priced.

I currently use an Atom / 64GB SSD / 2GB RAM / Windows 8.1 Acer Aspire Switch 10 with Logos 6.9 Beta 1 as my main machine. Logos is installed on a Micro SD card.

I have had this PC for about 8 months and like all Windows machines I've owned, it seems to be getting more and more sluggish and unstable over time.

I am thinking of getting a slightly more powerful machine with Core m5 / 128GB SSD / 4GB RAM / Windows 10 (with Logos installed on the main SSD instead of Micro SD card).

Has anyone had first-hand experience that could shed light on whether / how much each of the following factors would boost the performance of Logos (during indexing and also responsiveness during regular usage)?

Atom vs Core m5 processor
Logos installed on SSD vs Micro SD card
2GB RAM vs 4GB RAM
Windows 8.1 vs Windows 10

Note: I have 6,096 resources - a Portfolio-level library.

Atom vs Core m5 processor

The benchmarks provided by several techno-geeks suggest that there is little difference in performance between the newer, high end Atoms and the throttled down, less power hungry i5 processors used in tablets and ultrabooks.. The M5 (etc.) will provide better battery life and runs cool enough to be fanless.

Logos installed on SSD vs Micro SD card

This is your main bottleneck. It is impossible to get satisfactory performance installed on an SD card. >> IMHO

2GB RAM vs 4GB RAM

I get good results with the 2GB tablet. It does employ a fair amount of virtual memory. I'm sure that helps. Again, I use the 2GB Atom based 8" unit more than the 4GB i5 11" unit for small groups and as a Bible during sermons. More ram will speed up indexing. I think you see less speed improvement in regular use.

Windows 8.1 vs Windows 10

Windows 10 is a better all round os. It does provide a better experience with Logos. I use it on both the 8 and 11 inch tablet. Keep in mind that any machine running Windows 7 or 8 can be upgraded to 10 for free for a few more months. 10 is ever so slightly faster than 8.1.

If you are comfortable with a 12.5" screen, and if you think 128GB is sufficient drive space, the switch 12 would handle Logos in fine fashion.

I know I am late to this discussion but I am about to leave the Android tablet world for good. Been using one for a couple of years now along with the Logos Bible app and I will admit that I like the form-factor and the portability. But there are many negatives in my estimation. The following points apply:

1) Android seems to be not much more than a platform designed to accomplish one thing ... supply Google (and others) with information about the User which can then be sold to advertisers/retailers. I am so tired of constantly being barraged with advertising designed to try and catch my eye (and get me to click on it). Even with high speed internet (60Mbs), web browsing in the Android environment slows to a crawl because of all of the ads/videos/popups/etc. that are making it past the Ad-Blocker.

2) I am extremely dubious of all of the permissions/data that the apps claim to need to know ... Sudoku needs to know my location and who my Contacts are? Really!?

3) The ARM processors are slow and unable to handle any meaningful multitasking. An Intel executive once said (referring to ARM processor mfgs), "They make propellers. We make jet engines." And I think he was correct. As a result, Android only handles "apps" not full blown applications.

4) I detest the non-removable bloatware that comes with each tablet (I know ... I could always root it, but that's not what I bought it for. Besides, by doing so, I lose other functionality that I do want).

5) Generally no way to prevent the system from phoning home any time it wants to ... and who knows what it is reporting back to the mothership?

6) Using an on-screen keyboard is, frankly, a pain in the bazoo for anything more than just a few words.

There are probably a few more issues I could cite but you get the idea. I suspect much the same could be said about Apple. Anyway, I intend to return to a full blown, Intel-based laptop with Windows 10 and Logos for my mobile needs. At least I am able to know what the system is doing, have the power and speed to run full programs (not just apps), can genuinely multitask, and can block Microsoft spying and virtually all ads.

I just received a Windows Surface Book for Christmas. Logos and Mozilla Firefox are the only applications I have loaded so far. It is a 128 GB machine with 8 GB of RAM. The RAM is certainly adequate.

With 128 GB of storage it presented 80 GB for storage after loading Windows, Firefox, and about 20 GB of programs and resources for a 2000 book library.

As others have noted, the Windows desktop version is not touchscreen friendly. On the other hand, the text to speech is great. I listened to the introduction to a George Ladd book this morning. Text to speech on Windows greatly improved with Windows 8. This feature was the only good thing I had to say about Windows 8. It is hard to compare iPad 3 text to speech with Windows 10, but I think Windows 10 edges it out.

This Surface Book will replace my iPad 3, but the touchscreen issue will require some adjustment. If it were a lower cost tablet, I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. The touchscreen handling on the iPad 3 was far superior and provided all the functionality that I needed since I used it primarily for reading. So, yes, mine may not be a hefty size, but it is a hefty price tag.

My iPad 3 is running great with 128 GB. Mine is not slow at all. Have you considered refurbishing yours; i.e., starting from a fresh reload?
