SUGGESTION (not new): Remove the Merge advice in "New Resources"
This is causing too many problems in 4.0a as users are confused and think that they must Merge. Then they encounter index failures which can only be fixed by a full reindex.
Both the message and the section name are inappropriate. Please remove the former and rename the latter. Moreover, please hide that section until it is needed ie. search by Ranked.
Also, how stable is the Merge process in 4.0b? Can we attempt a merge with confidence?

Where do you propose the information should be available? - the other half of the issue.

I don't know, but from my reading of the customer base in the forums, I would err on the side of too much information.

Dave how do you trigger the merge index now? I use to see it, but having downloaded Beta10, (600+ MB)and even a few betas back, once Logos was finished doing what it did, I ran a search, and did not see any "new resources" coming up in the results, as previously done. I have sorted by book and rank. It seems as if L4 is rebuilding the entire index each time.
Do not know how long it tookto buid the index as I went to bed when it said "stage3 of stage3.

Simple answer --> "merge index" in the Command bar.

However, I think you are asking why the Indexer is not merging? It may be correct to assume that you have no supplemental index if "new resources" is devoid of results, but that may also be due to having infrequently searched resources in that index! But the end result of a merge or rebuild is the same as there is no supplemental index! Further, unless you look at a log it is difficult to know if a merge is underway or a full reindex.
I might also elaborate on my answer to Martha's query. The Indexer has the best knowledge about the state of any supplemental index and should be trusted to make the best decision ie.
- to add to the supplemental because there are few resources in it
- to merge the supplemental and main indexes because the supplemental is too large, or
- to rebuild because it is not happy about the state of the index/indexes
How does a user know there are "too many" resources? And what is the point of a user merging a single resource?

I will pass on your suggestion, the learning curve is high but I think enough time has passed.

I plea guilty to defrag my drives before maintenance software says I should ... keeps the process short and non-disruptive.[8-|]
