Disabling the indexer

I was talking to someone who had put Logos 4 on an old laptop. The laptop didn't have the power to get through indexing in a reasonable amount of time and he just wants Logos 4 for reading, not searching on that laptop.I suggested Quick Installation on multiple computers Method 1 but he didn't want to do that.

Is there a way to disable the indexer from starting up with Windows and when Logos starts? I looked at the startup programs and services in msconfig (XP) and I didn't see any way to disable the indexer at boot.

Would deleting the Logos4Indexer program have any negative consequences? Or would some sort of registry edit work?

Not really, but it would be better for him if he didn't have to pause the indexer every time he uses the computer.

The main Logos4 program might get mad and shut down. But why not try it? You could just rename it to something like "Logos4Indexer.exe.off".

However, you wouldn't get application updates or resource updates, since the indexer does that too..

IMHO the indexing is one of the biggest problems in L4. It seems to be very fragile if all the forum posts about it are to be believed. I feel that L3 searches were perfectly adequate for all the work I had to do - sermon preparation, Bible study, academic research. Yes, L4 searches are fast but look at the cost in terms of fragility and unreliability in indexing. Is it the same problem with the iPhone or is there no indexing and searching there?

Indexing is also one of the strongest features of L4. I had whole journal collection whose indexes were not done very well on L3. Topic searches sometimes missed journal articles which had the search token in the article name. I tested on L4 and all the journal articles now seem to be properly indexed. Without the ability to search, my journal collection really was not usable. Now it is!

I also had problems in January with the L4 indexing. Since it was on a mobile laptop I had to deal with the extra messages and the processor slowdown every time I booted, which was twice daily, until I solved the problem. It would have been nice to be able to turn off indexing for a while.
