I have Logos 5 on Windows 10. It has been fine until today. I've rebooted, but I get the same thing with no option to start it without waiting for the update.

Sorry to hear you are having problems.
To understand what is going on we would need to see logs - please see https://wiki.logos.com/Diagnostic_Logging for details of how to enable and post logs.
But I would recommend that you upgrade to Logos 6 first (as Logos 5 is no longer supported) and see if you still have a problem there.
The free core engine upgrade is available from https://www.logos.com/install
