While I am not thrilled by the 40% discount Zondervan is offering, I am not surprised either. The first Zondervan software product I purchased was the EBC in the pre-Pradis days. I skipped several upgrades because each time Zondervan upgraded their software you essentially had to purchase it all over again. The current 40% discount is pretty much in line with what they offered as an "upgrade" price. I finally purchased the EBC in Pradis 5 format (not as an upgrade, but as one of Rejoice's barn burner sales). I never upgraded to Pradis 6, because again the "upgrade" discount was not as good as Rejoice and others were offering.
So I am not upset about this 40% discount because it is consistent with what Zondervan has done in the past. Will I upgrade the EBC at a 40% discount? Yes, because I have saved a bundle of money by not participating in Zondervan's past "upgrades" and I will now have the EBC in a format that will always offer free upgrades in the future.
Let's just run the numbers and see if by Zondervan standards this is a fair upgrade. I am going to compare the 40% Logos discount to the street price of individual Pradis products that are still availer retail. I am not going to include any books that were a part of past Pradis box collections. Boxed collections are always the best way to purchase ebooks. Discounts in collections are usually in the 70-90% range. If a Zondervan book has been in a past boxed collection, it may be worth waiting to see if they will be apart of a future Zondervan boxed product. Here are the numbers (rounded):
Title Pradis Street Price Logos Discount Price
EBC $70 $78
NIVNTC $140 $150
NIVOTC $70 $78
NIDNTT $65 $62
NIDOTT $67 $96
NTBGC $70 $88
EncyB $70 $134
It is pretty clear that if I purchased a dead end Pradis 6 product, to "upgrade" an older Zondervan product, I would not be spending much less that I would by using the 40% Logos discount.
Let's put it another way, if Zondervan was still in the software business and were releasing Pradis 7, does anyone here seriously think your upgrade prices from Pradis 6 to 7 would be any less?
I suggest those who are complaining limit their upgrades to just the product listed above and consider it the last Zondervan upgrade they will every purchase for these works. As for the books they have in their old Pradis collections, I suggest to wait it out and see if Zondervan will release new boxed collections.
Finally, all this makes me very thankful for Logos and the way they do business. I think it also illustrates why Logos is the leader in the Bible software market and Zondervan was such a failure.
