Search List in Basic Search-Does it every automatically clear some items?

I know that the search list has the list of my collections to choose from which is very helpful and they remain there perpetually. However, I know that I don't have control over the long list beyond that of what I suppose are recent resources. Does this part of the list ever clear itself automatically or does it just keep lengthening the more resources I open?

I'm sorry for the late response.
Currently there isn't a way to clear/delete/sort the resources/collections shown in the Basic Search drop down list, but you've brought up an excellent suggestion - why not?
