Merging vs Reindexing

Is the resulting index the same, whether I reindex my entire library or merge the default index and the new item index?  I assume that merging is faster - is there any other advantage of using one method or the other to create a single index?

I don't know if the index is structurally the same, but, of course, functionally it is.

You have answered your own question:

By way of some history, when the first beta versions of Logos 4.0 were being tested, there was no merge index function. Every update of resources required a reindex of the entire library. That was considered onerous and Logos provided a way to just index the new resources and give an option to merge the indexes if you wanted to see all search results together. That saved a lot of time. Logos 4 monitors the size of the separate index and when it reaches a certain size, performs a reindex without being told to. Whether you choose to merge indexes or wait until Logos does so is up to you. Merging indexes is definitely faster than reindexing.
