community pricing changes

The list of books in community pricing has grown to, what, 450 titles. 30 Pages of 15.

I have bid the highest amount on a number of books thinking it might speed up production.

My suggestion: after a certain time, maybe a year, add up all the bids and see if that is enough. If I pay $100 for a book and another person pays $5, that's fine with me. The book is worth that much more to me. I will gladly pay.

The current system is great, but too many books are dying in there waiting for bids.

If a CP resource is "dying" because it is waiting for bids, this likely reflects a lack of interest in that resource among the broader customer base. I am not sure it would make sense for FL to spend the time producing a resource that so few are interested in buying, simply because they can find the money to do so.

I understand that many scholarly books have very short print runs, the reason being that they are too specialized for general use. That’s also why they are usually very expensive. Maybe Logos should only publish best sellers.

Logos tried to generate support for a translation of Spicq’s commentary on Hebrews. Apparently it went nowhere, even though Logos talked about this commentary as being probably the most cited book in most commentaries on Hebrews.

I also think a lot of modern students too often dismiss older books and often don’t even know who these people are. If Logos is too busy to publish them for now, OK. But who’s to say that because fewer people want a certain book, it must not be important.

I think the problem is partly due to people not knowing what is available in both community pricing and pre-pub. My guess would be that only a small fraction of the Logos user base actually takes the time to browse through it.

Maybe better advertising of books on pp and on cp?

Interesting idea worthy of attention. Are you saying that after a year a book could go into production if the varying amounts people were willing to pay added up to enough to produce the book? Each person would actually pay their bid price--what it was worth to them? I wonder if that would work?

why should there be complaints? People are asked to bid what they are willing to pay. If you are concerned about complaints, people could be reminded when the year is up and the terms of the community pricing.

There are good books there that may never get published.

With this model, what keeps me from bidding $1 on everything and then waiting until people who are serious fund my way? I can (maybe) see why you might want to have the benefit of a lot of freeloaders supplementing the resources you really want, but Logos has a vested interest in people not using CP to hedge their bets about wanting a resource later, or even dynamic pricing.

I agree with your assessment but I thought it was reported they couldn't get the rights to Spicq’s Hebrews, so not allowing them to translated from french. MY MEMORY may be WRONG. But there are numerous older works that are very good. The Speaker's Commentary (13 vols.) and A New Commentary on Holy Scripture Including the Apocrypha are two older works I think would be very valuable.

Yep. Spicq is not yet dead for 70+ years, and there is a French publisher of his book or some estate/heir that seems to hold the translation rights.

Perhaps because the accounting nightmare caused ... and the question of value for dynamic pricing.

an easy solution is to count down from the highest bids to the lowest. If enough money is there from the higher bids, then the lowest bids don't win, just like now.

I think the CP system as it exists is elegant and very good, but this would be a very nice tweak, leaving the basic structure in tact.
