I found a BUG: In the sermon editor I can't create an entry in the reference-box and in the subjet-box. When I type a reference (eg. John 3:16), nothing happens. There should be a choice of some references. I will add this bug to the google doc, ok?

Sorry this is your experience. It is working fine for me. Which version of Logos are you running on which system? Thanks.

    I'm running it with:

    1. Sony Vaio nw21, 4GB RAM, Linux Mint 19.2 XFCE (Ubuntu 18.4), 64bit, wine 4.17

    2. Tarox/Asus, 16GB RAM, Linux Mint 19.2 XFCE, 64bit, wine 4.17.

In both machines the same issue. In Win everything works fine. I own the Gold-Package German.

Logos updated to 8.8. SR 1 in the first machine (Vaio) before I could stop automatic update. But it worked fine. I blocked the wine update and fixed 4.17.

I recommend using a 32bit wine prefix on the 64bit system. You can move your documents and data into it.

    Thanks for this!

If I have time on my next weekend, I'm going to give this a shot. It's going to be an adventure, because I'm running Archman and not a Debian-based distro (so, no .deb files for me). This is truly a God-send. Thank you a lot.

There is a package in AUR to convert DEB files to Arch type installation files.  It's something like deb2arch it works very well, the problem is some of the dependencies are broken, so you will have to package those or install from source.

Bill, sorry for the bug! When I moved winetricks around (I install a local copy of it to ensure that the scripts for installing .NET are there rather than relying on the distribution's version of winetricks which may be too outdated), a bug crept in! The winetricks-cache folder is in /usr/share/wasta-logos-setup/resources/winetricks-cache, not /usr/local/bin of course! I have fixed this in the code, and it is building now. You want version 0.1.11 that will be ready in maybe another half hour.

ALSO, I have now made it so that the Windows version is set to win7 just before the Logos installer is run. Then after it successfully completes installation, the Windows version is set to winxp. This seems to match user feedback that Logos runs better with winxp as the version, especially for indexing, giving less error output, etc. So for everyone, look for version 0.1.11 for this change as well.

    Happy Logos'ing,

    Rik

What I meant was that some of the dependencies to complete an installation of Logos were not packaged. The package I believe is named as deb2tgz or something like that installs and works very well and has all dependencies.

Thanks, could you install logos in an arch-distribution using this package? I built the deb2targz, but  I don't  know, how to find and download the wasta-logos-setup.deb. I only found the html-Code at github. I'm really a grennhorn in Linux, sorry. But I'm willing to learn. And I'd love to use logos in my manjaro/arch distribution (in ubuntu it works quite well).

The .deb files get auto-built at Launchpad, so you can find them for manual download from here: https://code.launchpad.net/~wasta-linux/+archive/ubuntu/logos/+packages

Open the "spinner" next to the wasta-logos-setup package, and you should find the .deb there for download. Keep us updated!

Great news! The VP of Bible Study Products from Faithlife just gave approval for us to bundle the Logos.msi in wasta-logos-setup. It would increase the .deb size to just over 600MB. Is it worth it?

  • aaylnx
    aaylnx Member Posts: 84

Yes, I think it is worth it.

Though it creates a larger download, it not only makes things easier on the user's end, but also stabilizes things a bit.  I think we need to be careful that using updated installers does not introduce new bugs into the installation progress.  If you are able to package a known, good Logos installer in the wasta installer, that reduces the possibility that all kinds of bugs will be reported due to people being on different installers.  Hopefully, this will allow us to test new installers and green light them before they are packaged with wasta.

Good job reaching out to him and getting the green light!  If Logos folks are reading this, thank you!  I hope there can be further dialog between those trying to streamline Logos on Linux and the Logos team itself.

Awesome! It's got to be a big win for them too. Surely it will bring a few extra customers into play who might otherwise have stayed with bibleworks or xiphos or something.

Might have to check the agreement with launchpad though... posting it there might either break their hosting rules or in fact be implying it is open source?

I'll check, but I think it should be OK. Ubuntu has proprietary bundled software in their archives such as Nvidia drivers, codecs, etc., and Launchpad is their build service for everything. But again I'll try to confirm first.

The negative of bundling the installer is that it updates quite frequently, it seems, and this means we would need to re-release wasta-logos-setup often. After a person has it installed they will rarely use the things directly from wasta-logos-setup, meaning it is would be unused large downloads that we are putting everyone through.

I'll be traveling for a few days so will check in next week to see what other opinions are.

I am doing a new install on a laptop and I am getting the exact same error as Bill did previously.  It is clear that .net is not installing.  When I've run the installer on a previous machine (and it worked on that one) the .net install took a long, long time.  In this instance it takes only a few seconds and then moves on.  For some reason .net is not installing.

The log as well as a screen capture of the whole thing can be found here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1EazbVXv-MDQ0UlhxIx9D-pGC59tUlPYa

    Thoughts?

I ran the upgrade from Kubuntu Bionic LTS to Kubuntu Disco and so far so good with the Logos install. I was concerned something may go wrong in the upgrade of OS versions, but nothing apparent.

Amazing! It worked!!!! I can't even begin to express how happy I am. Logos is the only reason I still use Windows. Now, I can delete it from my computer and go 100% Linux. I follow the instructions, and after a few hiccups, it's working. I haven't tested everything yet, but all my books are there, the indexing worked perfectly, and my layouts are working well. I'll test it more carefully in the next days, but this is very exciting.

Thank you everyone who's worked on making this possible. I've invested a lot in Logos, so it's amazing that I can use it in Linux.

    Amazing!

    Bill,

I have figured out why the installer is failing and why .net is not installing.  In order for winetricks to install .net cabextract needs to be installed.  This explains why the installer was working properly on my desktop (where I do have cabextract) and not on my laptop (where I don't have cabextract).  Bill, if you do a "sudo apt install cabextract" and then run the installer, things should go much better.

Rik, can cabextract be added as a dependency to the installer?

    Thanks!

Today the new wine-version 4.18 was released. I tried to run the wasta-logos-patch. It didn't work. I think we have to wait until Rik has adopted his patch to this new version. I tried to downgrade winhq-devel, but I failed. Is there an easy way to do it? Or is it better to wait until the patch is updated?

I've updated the instructions with a new step 4.5 to get you going again... I'm sure Rik will update the package but in the mean time this extra step gets you there. If anyone is updating it will sort them too. I can confirm I'm running kubuntu 19.10 with wine 4.18 and it is as good as ever.

Thanks, aaylnx, that did it! Logos installed and is indexing as we speak. I am glad my travails resulted in some bug fixing. Now, I have to experiment trying to get this to work on my Pixelbook.

Well - All of a Sudden a Serious Bug has appeared. I had it running perfectly on Kubuntu 18.04, then 19.04 via upgrade and finally 19.10 via upgrade.

I wanted to try it out on a SSD. I have done a fresh install of Kubuntu 19.10, then followed the exact installation instructions and everything was running well when I went to sleep.

I allowed Logos to download all resources over night and woke up to the following crash. Rebooted and get the same crash every time I open Logos.

Bill if you get it going on a chromebook then please document your steps and share... I'm sure there will be others who own chromebooks that would be interested.

Yes. That's was how I did the fresh install and it was running fine. Then at some point during the overnight download that error popped up and crashes every time I start Logos. I even tried to go back and rerun the postinst.sh command you suggested on the side comments to no avail
