Upgrade Pricing

I am looking at buying Logos but don't know where to start. I was thinking of starting with the starter package or the bronze package as I only want to;

1. Copy and paste scriptures into documents

2. Use a concordance.

3. Use the Treasury Of Scripture Knowledge

4. Use a few commentaries

Yes, I'm a dinosaur that still likes to use my actual hard copy books :-)

My questions are;

1. If I start with one package, is the upgrade price the difference between the purchase prices of the day?

2. If I buy a version of the Bible that's not in my package, and later upgrade to a level that includes that version, do I get a discount for that?

Would appreciate any tips, insights or suggestions on this Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forums.

The answer to both questions is ABSOLUTELY, Logos calls it dynamic pricing. If you own resources that are included in an upgrade package, then you would receive dynamic pricing for that package. You would only be charged for resources that are "new to you." As a matter of fact, a lot of the packages and bundles will now display a "new to you" area to show you exactly which items in that perspective new package or bundle you do not already own and thus which resources you will be paying for.

As a followup to the first answer, the discount on the base package will (I'm ball-parking it) be about 1/10 of the full price of the Bible when bought individually, as base packages discount the resources and features contained therein roughly 90%.

Correct, assuming that all of the items from the starter package are in the bronze package when you buy it. Some times the packages get changed slightly, so the math may not work out exactly as expected. Also, sales prices may alter this scenario too. But, as a general rule, what you have stated is correct.

See my example below. If I upgrade to the Collectors Edition I will get credit (via Dynamic Pricing) for the resources in that package that I already own, as seen in the pop up beside the sales price, which is displayed when you hover around the Dynamic Pricing label.

Actually, she would receive more than 10% credit for items purchased outside a base package as a general rule. Its rare that its only 10%. It really depends on the item and the package. Every scenario is going to be different.

What she should keep in mind is that items in a package are discounted (since a bulk purchase is in view) so one would likely not expect retail credit for an item in a package that is not weight at retail in that package. So if she bought a $20 Bible, then upgrades later to a package that has the Bible included at a sales price of $10, then obviously she would only get credit for $10 and not $20. But she will not have to purchase the item twice, and will get credit for having already owned the resource. [:)]

I pastor a Church, but for years have used Bible software for basic tasks as previously stated. I've never ventured too far into Bible programs, but rathe use my Hard Copy books for most study. I'm thinking though, that if I bit the bullet and started using Bible software I will be be able to make better use of my time, once I get used to it. With that in mind, do you have a recommendation on what package I should start with. It seems like it wouldn't matter, as I could just upgrade as I go?

Thats a tough question to answer? It really depends on what you are looking for. Commentaries? Original language tools? Etc.

Take a look at this page to compare packages. If you can afford it, go with Silver or above. Those packages will give you access to more features and data sets (data that you can search on) in addition to the tons of resources you will get.

Its kind of hard to explain, but any of the resources in the base packages drive features or search data. As such, I would stick to a base package and then add the P&C package to it. These types of packages are more focused with getting you denominationally bent resources whereas the base packages drive features. Hope this helps.

I would suggest going with the P&C Starter base package or P&C Bronze base package if you can afford it. Note that a Gold base package is required to take advantage of all of Logos' features. Base packages are 15% off through Dec 31. You can compare base packages at https://www.logos.com/basepackages

Also, when you buy a base package, you can pick up one or more topical bundles for 15% off. Topical bundles are at https://www.logos.com/bundles

In general, buying a collection/bundle provides the most bang for the buck.

Thanks Robert. I can't seem to find Treasury Of Scripture Knowledge in the P&C packages. Am I missing something, or does the P&C have an equivalent, or do I just buy it separately as a bundle?

It is in the Standard Starter base package but not the P&C Starter package. So, you will need to do a package comparison to determine if the resources you want or included or not.

Another way to do this is to look up the resources you want, then look at the right hand column. It will tell you if the resource is included in a base package or some other collection. And of course, you can always buy the resources separately to tailor the base package you select.

It isn't in the P&C packages - it is in the standard Starter package (and in many other denominational packages)

Using the website you can only buy one base package in a single transaction.

If you want to buy two (as you do) it is well worth talking with someone in Sales as they can do the combined price for you.

Myke, above, referred to the extra datasets and features you get with the higher base packages. What Graham said. If there is overlap between the two packages, the website will not be able to tell you what the total price for both of them will be, but a sales rep can quote you a price that factors in dynamic discounts so that you are not paying twice for any resources that are common to both packages. I actually just did that last week.

In Logos, can right click on a word, then click lemma (or root) followed by search this resource for exhaustive concordance results:

Root search finds related words. Prior to Phillipians 4:4 are 15 verses that have root related to Rejoice.

Logos 6 also has ability to turn off display of Chapter and verse numbers. Visual Filter highlighting can show range of Greek verbal expression plus discourse markers. For example, Rejoice in Phillipians 4:4 is a present tense imperative for all to be Rejoicing (in the Lord).

I have been using Logos for over 7 yrs. I had a huge print library since I had been teaching through the Bible for about 40 yrs. I expected my electronic library to only complement my print library. I started with a basic pkg.

Logos was a paradigm shift. I quickly discovered that I had a personal assistant that instantly produced incredible results based on word, phrase, topic, or scripture reference. I was able to do all kinds of things that were impossible with a print library alone.

6 months later, I upgraded to Gold (the largest pkg at the time).

I upgraded to Platinum when it became available.

I have added a lot of reference works that are never included in base pkgs. I now have over 4600 volumes.

Logos is a very powerful library engine. The more resources that you have, the more valuable it becomes.

You always have a 30 day guarantee from Logos. I have only made one return in the time I have used Logos. It was a resource that I thought did not have the value I was looking for.

A salesman can be very valuable in helping you with your buying decisions, especially in deciding which order of purchase provides the best deal.

The answer to question 1 is a big "NO!" The upgrade price is not the difference between one base package to the next. It depends on what you own or not. Let's say you bought Starter today (nothing more) and 4 months later you wanted to upgrade to Broze, you would actually pay just a little bit extra and not the difference like you were told. Now, if you add a lot of resources to the Starter base package that are included in the Bronze base package then "dynamic pricing" will bring the upgrade price down somewhat considerably, but you still paid almost full price for the resources you added, so it may not work out so good taking that approach. The best approach is to get the highest base package you can afford at the time of purchase. My experience to illustrate: I upgraded to Baptist Platinum because it had a lot of resources I wanted and it included Liddell & Scott "big" Greek-English lexicon ($135 price tag if purchased separately). Liddell lexicon was also included in SDA platinum package for an upgrade price of $186, but I chose Baptist Platinum instead since the other resources in SDA Platinum were not so appealing to me. Now that I own Liddell's lexicon you would think the SDA Platinum upgrade price would come down a lot, but it didn't. It went from $186 to $176, so "dynamic pricing" to upgrade only took $10 bucks off for a resource that costs $135 if purchased separately! This is a proven fact, upgrade price is not the difference between base packages, because is not good for business. I was told that by a sales rep that no longer works there and confirmed by others that still work there - again, upgrade price is not the difference between base packages. I know some were quick to rush in and tell you yes to question one, but in reality the answer is no. You will pay extra, but is not so much that it will keep you from buying the upgrade so don't panic! I think they were quick to answer the wrong way because they didn't actually understand your question "...is the upgrade price the difference between the purchase prices of the day?" They automatically assumed your question was about "dynamic pricing" and not the actual question about the "difference" like you asked. They did, however, give you good information on dynamic pricing, but by reading your question, that's not what you asked.

The answer to question 2 is "yes" you would get some credit but not full credit and you might not like how much actual "credit" you will get (see my experience above).
