Tips for makeing Logos run faster
Anyone have some tips for making Logos run faster? I have a 1.6Ghz Pentium with 512MB of RAM and sometimes Logos runs so slow I get annoyed. I would love to know how to get more preformance without upgrading my hardware.

Well, it looks to me, with that hardware, I am surprised it works [:O] The only real cure for the Logos speed is going to be Logos 4.0 [:)]

There is only one thing which can help you without upgrading your memory (which I recommend since memory is cheap). Never run a search on your entire library. I'm sure you know where you're most likely to find what you're looking for so search that. I wouldn't look for a quote from Augustine in a Hebrew grammar but in the Nicene and Post Nicene Fathers so I would search that. I would still recommend upgrading your memory. I still have my old Gateway which I upgraded from 256 k to 768 (that's all the motherboard would take). I really have no problem running Logos on it. My "main computer" now is an HP notebook with 6 Gb of memory so it doesn't have any problems with being overloaded. Unfortunately, the Gateway is beginning to show its age. I probably would have gotten rid of it if there weren't some things on it I still want to transfer (including some files on a small HD that I had when I had my old Compac. I need to install that as my drive 2 on the Gateway in order to find what I still want -- I took it out when I installed the 150 Gb drive). Do upgrade your hardware or break down and buy a newer computer. You won't be sorry.

One more thing which might be slowing you down. Make sure you open the "Tools | Options | General" dialogue, click on the "Notes" button and see whether your note files are checked. If they're checked, uncheck them. Note files are always open which puts a drag on your 'puter.

I think searches will always be slow, if taken in a large collections. It really helps what George reccomends (to use targeted, smaller collections). Searches should be helped by the version 4.0, I hope.
One thing which really slowered me down very much, was pbb file made of a large HTML, linked with a few other resources (like Bibles). It slowered whole Logos. Also when you link commentary to your Bibles and it doesn't have all the Bible books, it also slowers down whole thing a lot. Also make sure your system is not using too many processes on the background. I always switch off anything I know is not needed. (I noticed once that my processor was occupied more than 60% all the time. I found Nero indexing did it. When I switched it off, my speed of the system increased dramatically).

That's a P4A, probably with a pretty slow ram and bus speed? I do believe a shopping trip is in order for you, a pc upgrade. Looking at the requirements on http://www.logos.com/support/lbs/faq#sysreqs it lists a 500mhz p3 as the minimum, that seems laughable, unless you never do a whole library search.

Logos has always had problems with speed in their searches; espcially when 3.0 came out and when you do a syntaxsearch or word study search it was very low. I had an HP 1.6GHZ with 1GB ram. I upgaded to a 2.0 Core 2 Duo with 4GB ram and it will run a word study search checking many of the syntax options and it wil do it in approxiamtely 15 seconds or less. I guess the final answer is upgrade your system as you can. Also, on all you reports, check the properties and make sure that unnecessary options are not checked. For example, on the passage guide, I have the sermon central and music and such unchecked. I have never found them to be helpful and certainly not necessary.[H]

Libronix runs faster with IE7 than IE6, but IE8 is almost as good.

I got suckered into "upgrading" to IE8 yesterday. It was one of those updates where they didn't specify what they were planning to install. I don't think I care for IE8. Color coded and basically simply intrusive.

you can use add/remove programs to uninstall 8 and go back to ie7. I wouldnt go back to ie6, too old, and lack of tabs is a usability thing for me, although I use firefox nearly exclusively anyway.

Yes, I'm aware of that. The reason I was not too eager to install it in the first place was that I hadn't heard anything that made it particularly desirable. When the download started and I realized that it was downloading IE8, I thought "Oh well, we'll see what it's like." I suppose I'll keep it for a time to give it a fair trial, but my initial response is that it's not much of an improvement -- if any at all. I find it a bit annoying; nothing in regard to its operation that I note since it seems much the same as IE7 otherwise. It makes me think of the Windows Media Player with all of its figures changing as the sound changes. I look at it and think "What a waste of programming skill" since I'm not going to sit there and watch the designs change but will minimize it to the taskbar which will itself be hidden.

I do most of my searches in collections, but occasionally when a search doesn't produce many hits, I have searched my entire library. The biggest advantage is not the hit, but discovering additional books that could be added to a collection. The result is that those books are included in future searches in a particular collection. Including PBB books, I have over 2500 books. I have been teaching a class on Religion and Cults this past semester. I have added several books to my search collection for this discipline by occasionally searching my entire library and discovering a book that has relevant information.
