Notes, Clippings & Highlighting

My question is how do you decide whether to use notes, clippings or highlighting when you are reading through a book in Logos. Suppose I am reading New Testament Introduction and I come across this sentence. "Nevertheless, the humanity of Jesus is not lacking and is in fact brought out with almost greater clarity than in the synoptics." I want to take note of this sentence. Do I highlight, add a clipping to a clippings file or add a note to a note file? In your studies how do you decide when and where to use these options in Logos?

You will find many different opinions on this. Personally, although I'm not totally consistent, I generally use the following guideline:

Highlight - I use this when I am reading and a particular quote stands out to me or when I want to do an "inductive"-style study to show visualizations.
Clipping - I use this when doing research for a particular topic that I want to eventually make into a message or paper.
Note - I use this when I want to did deeper into a particular passage or I would like to add my personal comments/observations.

I agree with everything Bruce says about the way to use each one of these tools. I would only add this practical way to use notes that is an advantage over simply using a highlight tool when you are reading your bible is that it allows you to create your own study bible with your own notes.

In addition to the foregoing, I would add that notes and highlights are reading helps in the sense that it is when you read or browse the resource again that these will help you (1) remember noteworthy passages (highlights) and/or (2) remember your thoughts about certain passages (notes).

Clippings, however, I don't find as tied up to any particular resource, but an extraction of quotations. I would find it a poor use of clippings to use it instead of highlights to remember noteworthy passages from one resource only. Why? Because unlike highlights, you have to go outside of the resource to see clippings. On the other hand, if you are using a resource as part of a larger study and want to compile a collection of noteworthy passages on a topic from a variety of resources, then clippings conveniently group all the quotations into one file and you don't have to open them all up, and skim through them all, one by one to check for highlights.

My question is: Can I highlight a section of text "In" a clipping entry?

I am starting a study in the Book of Acts using the Berean School of the Bible textbook (https://www.logos.com/product/8482/acts-the-holy-spirit-at-work-in-believers-bsb-level-1 ) and want to send to a clippings file points I want to remember so that I can find all of these points in one place. I also want to Highlight key phrases or points within each clipping. Is this possible? (I see that I can BOLD FACE the phrases but I would like to highlight them.)

Drat...[^o)]... I was hoping I was just missing something. Thanks for the answer. I'll live with bold-facing the text I want to point out to myself....

P.S. Even though it is not in the menu bar for the Clipping Editor, Ctrl-U will underline the text... that helps a bit...

Sorry, no.

Actually, "Yes," but it's cumbersome...

If you CUT the Clippings text you wish to highlight and PASTE it into a note (say), then highlight it using the notes toolbar button, you can then CUT and PASTE it back into the clipping. Like I said, cumbersome.

Don't understand why Logos didn't include the highlighting button in the Clippings tool bar...

There is a work around that I have used, and it is worth it if you have a large clip file with many entries.

Copy the text you wish to highlight and paste it into Word or whichever program you use for word processing, then highlight or format the text in any which way you choose. Now copy your newly highlighted/formatted text from your word processor and paste it back into your clipping file (make sure you select the same text first and simply copy over it). Voila! You now have highlighted text. This shows that the clipping feature supports all manner of formatting, only Logos doesn't allow us direct access or control, necessitating a work around.

I would suggest another technique. I almost always employ notes instead of clippings. As Francis pointed out, taking a clipping does not leave any annotation in the original text. I almost always want that annotation.

However, I copy the noted text into the note. Thus, my note files are pretty much readable on their own. I also get the noted text annotated. If I don't want to see this annotation, I can always go to the filters pull down and turn off the notes file.
